You strike me as a Fellow who has never actually worked below ground.

Would that be the case, my Friend?

Wow, shocking. When I walk around Thailand health any safety risks scream out at me as the industry I'm in drills it in to us. On my first trip I tried to intervene but its know use they don't want to listen.

When entering a vessel, or a sewer in this case, you should always have a spotter, it could be your best friend who has collapsed but the spotters role is to immediately radio for back up and nothing else. By entering the same place as where the incident has occurred you put yourself and the unconscious person in greater risk of losing your/their life.

The last time I was in Patts I walked by a guy grinding a piece of steel rod. He had no eye protection and didn't even have shoes. He was crouched down as the grinder was at floor level and it didn't have a guard in place. He had a loose tshirt on that could quite easily have caught in the grinder.... are these guys fearless or just uneducated to the risks they are exposing themselves to?

Very True

All these safety criteria add costs to the job.

I wonder how long SE Asia will last under its own Devil May Care Safety Regs.

Add that to the already publicised Singaporean Wealth Distribution figures, going backwards. Just watched a show on Channel News Asia.

And you will see why, My Good Self, as an Asian Monger reckons-

Not in My Lifetime. March on.

Be careful of these Indian/ S.E. Asian Chaps who suck their teeth at you.

They may be a bit pre-mature.

Health and safety is non-existent in Thailand.

For example, last trip i saw a guy mig welding, with no mask, above a bar with customers inside and sparks flying everywhere.

One,could well get arc eye, which is painful as fuck as i have had it before as i was a panel beater for 15 years, and two,the fire risk and potential burns for customers in the bars.

Most of the welding I've seen in Thailand has been done sans mask.

Surely those 99 Baht Ray Bans are OK?   :hello09:

Wish safety was more important in Thailand (and other places). But it's easy to figure that some employers don't see the need to invest in work force safety in a country where parents drive around on motorbikes holding their infants.

Posted

That's why i always smile when i see everywhere in Pattaya "SAFETY FIRST".... they don't know about this word really.

The motorcycle park in Central Festival is a joke with all the pipes under you head, full of motorbikes everywhere.... i'm not surprised if a dramatic accident like an explosion happen later.

thats why all the big car plants etc are relocating to thailand,no health and safety,300bht min wage ,long hours ,hardly any holidays,no sick pay,no working rights whatso ever, the western world cannot compete on costs in the uk the min wage is £6 ish per hour most thais dont get that for a 12hr day,the health and safety in the uk is good for the worker but some times its way over the top, bit ironic really got some of the best work and safety standards but now no fucking jobs.

The big problem is that is often ueducated workers with no formal training doing the job's who are despeate for money and not aware of the dangers.

I think every girl i ever met in Thailand ( and thats many :-) ) all have a few horrible motorbike scars most of them could have been avoided with some normal common sense, but why care about tomorrow .

Its the same all over Asia, The construction workers buliding the new China are poor uneducated farmers and working without safetyline and attaching the other end to the friend is common... i guess they dont like to die alone.

stayed in vt2 jomtiem last year they were painting A building, they absailed from the top down 18th floor wearing shorts t shirts flip flops,on a single rope no harneess ,hard hat, saftey line and were sitting on two pieces of 4by 2 nailed together couldnt believe it.but they did the job certainly a lot cheaper than in the uk were youd have to scaffold the whole building which would cost a bomb.

Is it true that sewerage gets pumped out into Pattaya bay? If so that's serious cause for alarm, shit can kill 2 men in no time is floating around in the sea and being eaten by fish.

Yeah man treatment plants are few and far between in Asia.....

Be careful what you eat and where you swim!

Very Interesting!

Confined Space = recipe for disaster!!!!  I know this is Thailand but for anyone entering a confined space think first before you enter!!! Even if you think it is safe!!! Not everyone has a gas checker in their back pocket or airpacks. Just remember gas can be odorless and you can't see it. It will get you in a heap of shit real quick.

Watched a man cutting down a large tree with no safety equipment at all, only flip flops on his feet.  He then took the flip flops off to walk on the tree when it was on the ground to cut off the limbs ( tree limbs, not his ) as he said he was safer in bare feet!   He never had any training, no safety equipment but did this every day for a living and still had all his fingers and toes!

If you have seen the video of the police trying to resuscitate a girl who drowned you'd understand thailand is about 20 years behind the west. They crushed her rib cage, hung her upside down, moved to her belly for compression's. Knowledge is power in these situations, we take for granted our childhoods that teach us basic danger concepts.

But it keeps the population down, so I guess we wont have to stop procreation just yet.
