Not a scam

The owner maybe a member here as the link to a Pattaya Forum comes straight to here.

It's a good idea in some ways, not that I would need to use it but some people might.

Prices are a little high I think though, 7000 baht for 16 hours? Thats a Thai's months salary!

And is it 7000 baht per person or per group?

not a scam at all. they are offering a service. some newbies would be happy to pay $200 to be shown around on there 1st day and have a drinking partner. Then they are free for the rest of there trip with a fist full of information from the day b4.

I'd do it for free, just give me beer! How can someone want to cash in on a newbie? We were all newbies once, getting ripped off by Thai's is understandable, but by your countrymen? BULLSHIT!

not a scam at all. they are offering a service.

So lets disect this err um service a little.

The benefits are as follows...

You will have an native english speaking person available to translate your Thai, in the bars or wherever you go.

~Anyone around here have problems in Pattaya with not speaking Thai ? I speak Thai fluently and very rarely have the need to use it in Pattaya.

Someone to make sure nothing bad happens, i.e protection.

~What like they provide an armed bodyguard, or maybe your escorted around by a policeman !

Local knowledge is valuable, you will be taken to the best places and wont waste time on the places that are duds.

~Intresting! What constitutes a dud place for a guy thats never been to Pattaya ?

You will get invaluable information about what to do and what not to do.

Shown the best short time bars and go gos.

Why not join a forum and just have a drinking buddy for free?

~Excellent idea. Pity they never reccommended, Pattaya Addicts forum... Oh but wait..they then continue with.....

To get a drinking buddy it takes time up to go out of your way and meet them, then you have to compromise where you go and its very unlikely you will both have the same tastes in the bars that you will select.

~Oh really...So its guaranteed the bars the newbie is introduced to, by a complete stranger (tour guide) will have the same taste as himself, with no compromises ?

Pattaya has over 1000 bars and over 4.5 million visitors a year, the place is huge and the amount of bars and roads are messy.

~ Hmm ok. Big fooking deal. So what ! I dispute the messy bars though.

If you are coming on a 2 week vacation, why wonder around and get lost. You can join a Pattaya Forum and get a wingman, but some people just dont want to hang out with other guys, they want to get to Pattaya and get to the where the business is at.

~ Have to laugh at that one haha. These other guys !! Do you think he means the guys that go to Pattaya to play dominoes, or race pidgeons ?

If you have different tastes, including ladyboys or men, it doesnt matter, we dont hold grudges, although personally my experience is only in the straight scene. We can cater for all needs as there are quite a few expats agreed to join this sceme as there are alot of guys with time on there hands.

~Nicely worded (we dont hold grudges) for anyone who happens to be gay & mug enough to pay for this tour, that will sound most welcoming to him.

If you are particular about the age of the people who will be guiding you, please say so, then we can select someone suited for your requirements.

~ Hers a scenario then. Three 18 year old newbies from New York arriving next week. They require guys of the same age. Will they be guided by a well experienced tour guide & not some boring old ex pat with time on his hands?

My intuition tells me its the very same ex pats that they say that have joined the scheme ( yes scheme indeed) with time on there hands, that are behind this venture, ahhm scheme. As Panudate as already said ' cashing in on a newbie. Sorry but the whole thing leaves a lump in my throat.

Lets try and apply a little logic here

7000 for 16 hours - thats 438 baht an hour or £6.40 an hour - hardly a rip-off although yes, high by Thai Standards.

I can well remember my first day in BKK - I would have saved DOUBLE that if I had a decent guide (newbie conned by street tout, OK OK).

If people are prepared to pay whats the problem?

No-one is conning anyone or forcing them to do it after all, it all seems quite up-front to me - charges displayed and no hidden extras from what I can see. Sure, experienced visitors and people who use boards wouldn't pay it but then again there are over 3 million visitors to Pattaya every year and the 3 main forums have a mere handful of those on board.

High indeed. Now multiply that by lets say 4-5 newbies per day...28-35,000baht. Not a bad wage for a day on the piss.

Bangkok different ball game. Totally. Scam artist on every corner, rip of taxi drivers, exstortionate checkbins in clubs etc etc. Pattaya? Well i might have paid over the odds for a fake watch once.

But then read any travel book on Bangkok or 5 minutes on the net. Its all there for anyone who wants to save throwing away 7,000 baht. C'mon its not like the newbies are trekking through the Amazon Jungle.

Sure, experienced visitors and people who use boards wouldn't pay it but then again there are over 3 million visitors to Pattaya every year and the 3 main forums have a mere handful of those on board.

Well seeing as how the advert is on this board, anyone signing up for this service would have to be one of the mere handful in which case it would blow me away to think anybody needed a guide after spending time on this board.

It is only a scam if you don't get what you think you are paying for. If you think the price is too high for you you don't buy the services.

Here is an example. You can pay companies to climb Mount Everest. They provide the infrastructure for you to do so. You can pay anywhere from $US13,500 (maybe even less) to $US60,000. Is the $60K a rip off? Well no, not really. For your $13,500 you are pretty much on your own. For the $60K you are more or less taken by the hand and dragged up the mountain. Incidentally for the $60k you are still not guaranteed to return alive. In 1996 a couple of such companies lost about 8 people including some of their staff.

BTW if someone wants to buy me a few beers I'll show you around..

Exactly, I wouldnt want to get paid for it as such, just a few beers would do it for me, i've done the same think in Bangkok.

I'm always happy to meet newbies and show them around.....done it twice this last week as a matter of fact.

I certainly wouldn't want to be paid for it and do see this as a little strange. It's not a new idea though, four or five peole think of it and try it out every year that know of.

It never works.

I really think it's part of the Game that you go out by yourself & test these thing out . I would'nt bother with a Hand Holding service.

:Agree1:

Totally agree with that. I arrived back from Pattaya after my first trip and finding your way is half the fun of the trip. Exploring new places and get afeeling of the place was a pure pleasure for me and my friend(also a newbie)

Learning by doing is the ultimate way to do it, though it will be expensive somethimes.
