My Udon Thani Experiences

Featured Replies

I went to Udon Thani to visit my TGF at her village.  I don't intend to include my village experiences in the report but thought some might appreciate an update on Udon Thani nightlife.

Day 1: I arrived at the Bangkok airport at 8:00am and picked up my luggage at baggage claim.  I have an AIS sim card in my cell phone so I located the AIS booth on the 2nd floor of the terminal and purchased 50 baht for my card.  Afterwards I went to the K bank ATM which was located on the first floor.  The frist floor was also the only place I found an outlet to charge my cell phone.  After getting a full charge I went to check in for my Thai Airways flight to Udon Thani.  I had paid for the ticket ( 4100 baht) online.  My domestic flight was uneventful and I arrived in Udon Thani at 3:25 pm.

I picked up my luggage and went to The Pannarai Hotel and got a two night rate for a deluxe room for 2960 baht.

After check-in I desperately needed a shower  and then I went for a walk and found the Central Plaza Mall. The place reminds me of a mall in USA, so I did not care for it or the feeling that I was almost shopping which I also dislike very much.

After finding the mall exit,  I  walked back to The Irish Clock which is next to The Pannarai Hotel and had a Thai dinner inside which was fairly inexpensive (350 baht).  Afterwards I walked across the street to the outdoor bar called the Lucky Shamrock.  I wanted  to play the dice game with a bargirl there and have a few drinks.  We played the dice game with 3 dice as they play it at Nightwish with a maximum three throws and a triple of any die is an automatic win.

I was a beautiful evening outside and I had a great time playing the dice game and having a few beers.  I was really suffering from jet lag though so I headed back to the hotel for some rest.  I woke up at 1:00am, dressed and walked outside the hotel.  They "roll the sidewalk up" in Udon Thani at midnight, except for two bars in the Day and Night complex just down the street which were open at opposite ends of the complex.  I stopped in for a few drinks at the Seven Stars bar and talked to an American who lived in Nong Khai along the Mekong river approx. 80 km from Udon Thani.  He is married to a Thai and has a farm with rubber trees.  I really don't know much about rubber trees, but supposedly you harvest rubber every 2 weeks and it is a two day process.  After the bar closed at 2:30am, I returned to hotel and went back to the room.  The bar girls were available but I wasn't interested.

Day 2:  It is sad to think that I am already losing my days in Thailand and soon I will leave. I need to not be melancholy about the trip ending and focus on my happiness being in Thailand. I had the free hotel buffet breakfast  of fruit, coffee, egg omelet, eggs over easy, and some of the best thick bacon that I have had for awhile. I had two servings of bacon.  Afterwards, I had several items to take care of before I went to visit my girlfriend.  I wanted to deposit funds in the bank, get a shave and arrange for a rental car.  I walked to the Central Plaza at 8:30am because the bank was suppose to be open, but unfortunately the Central was closed until 11:00am.  Instead I walked around the downtown area and got a shave at a salon that was really bad.  Bleeding from several cuts I  went back to Central Plaza and could not exchange funds at my bank (K bank), so I went next door to the Siam Commercial Bank and got a 29.36 exchange rate.  I hate banks! I walked back over to K bank and deposited my funds into my savings account.

It was bloody hot, so I went back to the room and  I checked the GPS for the village and the Convertible resort in Wang Sam Mo.  Feeling very tired afterwards, I went to sleep for four hours.  When I awoke I went across to the Lucky Shamrock and played the dice game with only two dice. I walked through the Day and Night complex later  that evening and had a ladyboy from the Beau at the back end of the complex try to muscle me into the bar.   I finally managed to break free and went back to Seven stars for a drink.  It was now 10:00pm and I wanted something to eat.  Now it was only 10:10pm but the Irish Clock had stopped serving food. The sign on the window says food service ends at 10:30pm but LOS.  Udon Thani in this area really begins to shut down in the evening.  It is definitely different from Pattaya in that respect.

Day 3:  I did well and awoke at 6:00am for a quick shower and went to breakfast at the hotel and the good news is they had bread that I like. The bad news was that the woman preparing eggs did not know how to prepare over easy eggs.  I finished breakfast and went back to the room and finished packing.  My rental car arrived at 7:00am and I was on my road trip.  I had a great time and actually like Udon Thani for a change of pace.  I am in my 50's and found it relaxing.

I forgot to attach photo from the Seven Stars bar.

Thanks for the report, did you have any pics of the room of you hotel or could you give your opinion of the quality? cheers.

The Pannarai Hotel has very nice rooms but you need to be careful or you could find yourself with two twin beds in the room.  When I came back to Udon Thani on a Friday night, they only had rooms with two twin beds.  I do not have ant pics of the room. Sorry.  @Home rooms are OK, not as nice as Pannarai Hotel but the deluxe room is roughly 1/2 the cost.  I actually thought both were OK.

I like Udon, when there I always have lunch at the food court, lower level Central Plaza, good food for a reasonable price! Bit of a different flavor than the sex tourism capital that is Patts, Udon Thani is part of the Thailand that I love, far away from the tourist areas! I do like Pattaya, but after about 4 nights, I've  had enough of the place and must move on!

A good report. Im thinking of doing a trip up way so doing some research.

Not sure if there or Chaing mai will suit me so might have to visit both.

You have a free room open to you in UT now if you want it. Fishing place nearby too.

I love Udon thani, plenty of girls and bars in your way from the Pannari Hotel (Great hotel and breakfast).  to the train station.  Recommend the place for a 3-5 day stay!!
