Was listening to this report the other night from Australia, where guns are outlawed, some guy wanted to kill his missis and took an axe to her, chopped her up and bashed her head in. Had this man had access to a gun he would have shot his wife, which in all likelihood she would have far preferred over being chopped up with an axe.

 

So the moral is it's not the guns that do the mass murders but the fuck'n loony pulling the trigger. If the loony didn't have a gun he'd make a bomb, or start a fire, or sort out some other way.

Even nutballs like Lanza in Conn go to "gun free zones" to do their shooting. Schools, theaters, malls are all places were law abiding gun owner must not take their weapons, that is where the shooting sprees happen. Here in Ohio, smart store owners post signs welcoming licensed gun owners in their stores, a great way to deflect the criminals who may shoot their customers.

A Connecticut Democrat Senator who has been working with the victim families, Richard Blumenthal, said after the Senate rout: ''The world is watching the United States – and we will be held accountable.'' Excuse me, next time the US struts the world stage, claiming American exceptionalism, setting itself out as leader of the so-called free world, it risks being dismissed as a nation of idiots. It's too easy to defer to strong polling support for gun control and to just vent about the Senate and the House – after all, who elects them?

To an outsider it seems a no brainer to have better background checks. Looks like the gun makers have managed to bribe a few senators to bloke this

I am a lifetime member of the NRA and I am for universal background checks.  In reality, they are already taking place, including in Virginia where I am from.  The so called gun show loop hole is a myth.  I go to gun shows all of the time and although private gun transactions are permitted, no one is selling guns to anyone without a federal firearms dealer running a check on the buyer first.  Go to a gun store on the weekend and the gun dealer is performing background checks on potential buyers for sellers all day long.  The reason being that it is the responsible thing to do and it limits the seller's liability and it is cheap to do. People complaining about internet sales on gun websites also do not understand the process.  If I sell a gun on a site such as Gunbroker, the entire transaction is done via Federal Firearms License holders, who are required to do the background check before they can transfer the gun to the buyer.  In case you do not know, a Federal Firearms License is issued by the federal government and is very hard to obtain.  Anyone selling guns in a retail or wholesale environment is required to have one.

 

The issue that most gun owners have is that the new laws being proposed do absolutely nothing to address people with mental health issues, which is the real problem.  All of these mass shootings were committed by crazy people, who were known to be crazy, but the government and mental health system did not deal with them.   Also, there are fears about the creation of a national database of people who owns guns.  As far as politicians being bought, I disagree,  Obama may have won the presidential election, but 50% of the House and Senate won elections as well.  In many parts of the country, guns and hunting are very important.  Usually when a elected representative gets on the wrong side of an issue in the view of their constituents, they usually loose future elections.  Politics are always local.

You waste your time here.  The foreigners have been told by their media that the NRA is bad and they buy it.  They don't comprehend that the bills proposed do nothing to remedy any problems and are nothing more than kneejerk "do something" stupidity by the Democrats in a vote buying effort.  Laws that don't work should never be passed.

 

For myself, not an NRA member, and I would have been OK with passing a law requiring background checks even between private individuals providing:

 

1)  The system MUST be upgraded so that there are no delays.  Gun shows occur on a weekend and some people travel to them.  The check must be instantaneous.  

 

2)  Families handing down firearms within the family should not require checks.

 

3)  The federal government figures out a way to allow private individuals to do a transfer without having to travel to a FFL dealer for those who live remote from one.  

 

4)  Feds pay FFLs to do transfers.  Has to be something in it for them or they won't offer the service.

 

5)  NO REGISTRATION EVER.

 

And of course I do not sell my weapons to anyone.  Even though I get less for them in trade I take them to a dealer who will then do a background check on the next buyer.  I sleep better knowing I haven't provided a thug with a weapon.

I always wonder what the fuck is the use of hitting a deer or a rabbit with an assault rifle or a sub machine gun. But then them critters might be armed.

Perhaps my knowledge of history is sadly inadequate but I seem to recall that the U.S. Second Amendment to the Constitution in 1791 granted "the right to keep and bear arms" to a populace that subsisted largely by hunting. And as the country expanded westward both subsistence and protection absolutely required firearms.   And as for the Aussie flamers of the U.S., wasn't Australia, where gun ownership is unlawful, founded as a British penal colony? 

 

My own father and grandparents were poor rural farmers in upstate New York where hunting provided their primary means of obtaining meat as recently as 1917 - 1935 and there are still residents there for whom it is a necessity.  NEW YORK STATE!

 

I was a licensed firearms owner in New Jersey where I underwent an exhaustive background check by local and state law enforcement who even consulted the FBI which had cleared me for a "top secret/cryptographic access" clearance during my military service, the highest clearance granted by the NSA before being granted my license and I had to register my weapons.  I totally agree that private ownership of automatic weapons is unnecessary, even for sporting purposes, but they are available through unlawful means legislation aside.  The saying "Outlaw guns and only outlaws will have guns." has more than a grain of common sense.

 

The recent proposed legislation was purely politically motivated in an effort to cash in on isolated incidents resulting in public outrage.  They were committed by mentally unstable individuals who were known to be unstable and yet obtained firearms.  THAT is where legislation is needed; requiring psychiatrists/psychologists to make known to local law enforcement people with such disorders.  Medical record privacy be damned, if an individual poses a threat it should be known!

 

And as for committing mass murder using firearms need I remind anyone that the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 was performed using a bomb made of fertilizer (ammonium nitrate) and fuel oil, both necessary commodities available nearly anywhere?  Or that the Boston Marathon bombing committed recently was done using "IEDs", the composition of which is still under investigation.  Latest news suggests that they were constructed by more sophisticated means than would be expected of a couple of teenagers. Who were immigrants from Chechnya.

Obama is acting rightfully outraged but if you know anything about politics you would know little is as it appears. I am not going to waste space explaining the whole scenario here, but to put it simply, Obama and Reid had a number of alternative ways to propose legislation that would require more background checks and they chose the way that was most likely to fail. This is not to say the Republicans don't share some blame, but Obama and Reid are far from blameless for the failure of the gun control legislation.

 

And as someone said previously, the number of gun purchases occuring without background checks is far less than the media typically suggests.

Polls don't reflect the true will of the people.  Elections do.

 

Note the last time stupid gun laws were passed in a kneejerk fashion like the one shot down this time, the party that led the way for that was massacred at the voting booth and lost lots of seats.  They know the REAL will of the people (not the twisted polling results of those with an agenda) is not for more gun control.

Good points. First and foremost I have no guns nor have I ever owned any.  When I first moved from Canada to the US I was for gun control and this over 10 years ago.  Since I have witnessed the corruption in Washington and come to appreciate the wisdom of Thomas Jefferson, the Constititution of those who so selflessly wrote it - I now stand in favor of the 2nd amendment which is the right to bear arms designed to give the people a fighting chance against a government that betrays them.  Obama himself is as corrupt as Bush and Clinton before him.
