Songkran Celebrant Killed In Pickup Truck Crash

A speeding pick-up truck containing 4 people returning from the Bangsaen Songkran festival crashed into an electric pole near Sri Racha. One person died and 3 others were injured. The driver faces a drunk driving charge if tests show he was legally drunk.

SRI RACHA – April 16, 2013 [PDN]; at 5:30 p.m., a report of a vehicle crashing into a traffic pole was received by Pol.Capt. Udom Koikeb, police officer of the shift, Sri Racha provincial police, Sri Racha, Chonburi. The police went to the scene with rescuers from Sawangprateep foundation Sri Racha.

The incident occurred on Sukhumwit Rd. Pattaya inbound, opposite of anti-aircraft battalion 12, Bangpra, moo 10, Bangphra, Sri Racha.

At the scene, officers found a dead body lying on his back on the road. He was identified as Mr. Ampol In-nork, 32 years old. There were also 3 injured people, including the driver, who were sent to Queen Sawang Vaddhana Memorial Hospital.

At the median in the middle of the road, a blue Isuzu DMax pickup truck was lying overturned, near the broken electric pole it had collided with. There were beer cans scattered around the place.

From investigating, police found that the pick-up containing 4 people to play with water in the Songkran festival was returning from Bangsaen, and was headed to central Sri Racha.

The vehicle was traveling at a high speed, and at the time it was raining heavily, so the driver lost control and the truck skidded into the electric pole at the median in the middle of the road. The impact flung the passengers from the pick-up onto the road violently, killing one person and injuring the other three.

The police took the driver to have an alcohol test. If they find that he had drank alcohol while he was driving, he will be charged with drunk driving in addition to careless driving resulting in death and injuries.
