Songkran road toll rises to 173

The death toll from road accidents in the first three days of the Songkran holiday break has reached 173, an increase of 29 per cent from last year with 1,526 people injured while drunk driving was a the major cause of accident.

Unfortunately it is going to keep rising

every holiday is the same pure carnage 

they must be the worst drivers on the planet

I am sure it is worse during the holiday since less are working and nobody stays indoors. But what are the average daily stats. with 67 million people.... (or so), is 173 significantly out of place? Again I assume it is higher than normal but by how much.

 

I don't mean to be callous but is it significantly more so during the holiday?

my simple math says something like 25 a day is the average... so 173 for 3 days is a bit more than double the average.

Also seems, although there are 10% more people in Thailand than in the UK, the road deaths for 2011 were a bit more the 4x more in Thailand.

 

Honestly I think it boils more down to (in the following order):

driver training (both requiring practical and written training)

road setup (blind corners, quick lights, congestion, lighting)

massive disparity of speed in which drivers will drive/pass others

drink/drugs
