I was astonished to read the below article by John Pilger today. Not because of its revelations but because I deal with almost all these points in my novel BACK, although from a different perspective, which I can’t mention as it would ruin the plot. Let’s just say it’s up close and personal with my jungle-trekking backpackers.

I came by my information about the US and Thatcher’s government (and others) helping the Khmer Rouge, and about the SAS training them how to commit terrorist acts inside Cambodia, without referring to any writing of  Pilger’s as I thought he might be too tainted a source (even though he’s a distinguished writer – I just didn’t want to politicise my own research).

He even mentions people who get a walk on reference in my novel, such as Ray Cline, the deputy director of the CIA who secretly visited a Khmer Rouge camp in the jungle. Apparently the villagers gave him a rapturous welcome, according to a Khmer Rouge publicity statement at the time.
