Medical expenses on the rise ... ?

Featured Replies

Had an operation due to an abdominal hernia in Sept 2011 in Bangkok hospital Pattaya , total costs 68.000 Bht .

Expensive but service and quality very good .

Yesterday got a quote for the same operation on the other side in Bangkok Pattaya and the total costs would be

155.000 bht , WTF .

Everything the same , same hospital , same doktor , 1 night stay but more than double the price of 9-2011 .

Think will have a look in Sri Racha or maybe someone has an other option ?

Thank god we`ve got the NHS here in the UK,its got its faults and problems and in need of reform in certain areas, but we`re so lucky to have it.

If you look at the decline in Western currencies and increase in prices, LOS is not the great deal it was in the past. Expect things to get worse, not better.

I do have a good PMI and they will probably pay for the operation but the hospital wanted me

to pay them upfront and after claim it with the insurance .

Told them to do the paperwork first and claim it theirself by the insurance as i'm not gonna

pay 155k upfront hoping the insurance will pay it back to me .

Would take 3 or 4 days to get an answer but in case they won't cover it i was already looking

for an alternative as i'm shore a not farang orientated hospital will do the surcery for a

lot less .

So what your saying is that your Private medical insurance policy is only limited for a certain type(s) of operations?

Meaning you don't have full medical cover?

I have full medical cover but maybe they don't agree with 155k while another

hospital might do the same operation for 60k .

When i pay upfront it is easy for them to bail out .

Wow it's really weird how Private health insurance works in Thailand. In Australia its usually your doctor that refers you to a surgeon who has expert skills (or well renown) in that field, so the insurance company would have to fit the bill regardless of cost.

So a very good idea is to tell them you Don't have medical insurance and then ask them how much as I know they charge different rates if they know you have medical insurance as they wanted to charge me 15,000 for a MRI then once I told then I don't have it I received my bill and it was like 8,000 and also keep in mind it is a demand and supply situation and they have alot of demand and they have to pay for there new expansion

Regardless of cost....biggest issue with private health surgery in Oz is the greedy fcuken doctors who charge well in excess of the govt agreed rates, then you have to pay a huge excess even though you have 100% top private cover!

Is it so weird ... these insurance guys aren't crazy and know how much a certain operation on average will cost .

When the price is twice the average they might not pay the full sum .

Just got the green light for the 155k so will have the surgery next week .

Yes gazman, i totally agree with your coments. The excess (or gap) is a sore point with myself also, it turns people away from getting any type of private health insurance, wheather full or basic.
