SATTAHIP – April 8, 2013 [PDN]; at 8 a.m., the arrests of 4 monks from Cambodia on obscenity charges was announced by Vice Admiral Chainarong Charernrak, Commissioner of Sattahip Naval base, together with Pol. Col. Chonnaphat Nawalak, Superintendent, Sattahip police station.

They had mobilized the forces of the detective police team and the officers of operating to fight against drugs, Sattahip Naval base, under the operation led by Captain Khomphan Ooppalanon, the director of Operations Division and News.

The 4 Cambodian monks arrested were monk Thach Nak, age 35, monk Ram Kim, age 38, monk Kerd Viasna, age 41, and monk Chaeng Chalee, age 42.

They were charged with having obscene media material and soliciting money from people without permission. Police seized the evidence of 4 mobile phones with obscene video clips inside, and some cash.

Capt. Khomphan Ooppalanon revealed that he had been receiving continuous reports since March 2013 that there were a lot of Cambodian monks in the area, who had traveled from the border of Amphur Aranyaprathet, Sakaew province, but the police still didn’t know their exact purpose.

But the news division informed police that the Cambodian monks traveling into Thailand would set up a sun shelter on the side of the well in front of Tambon Khetudomsak municipal, Tambon Sattahip, Amphur Sattahip, Chonburi province.

The monks would set up sunshades together, then separate to alms bowl for food and solicit money from people. Since the monks were entering navy property, the commander sent a team of officers to inspect the 4 monks while they were soliciting money.

Initially, the police invited the 4 monks to the investigation room to investigate them. During their inspection, police found some amount of cash from soliciting. While inspecting the mobile phones of the 4 monks, officers found the mobile phones contained a lot of obscene video clips.

So the police invited monk Kaew, the Abbot of Ampharam temple, to get the 4 monks to leave the monkhood immediately. During questioning, the 4 defendants confessed that after they came back from soliciting money during the day, they liked to watch obscene media every night, to gratify their sexual emotions.

During this current trip to Thailand, the 4 monks had joined together with other monks from many temples, who were assigned the area of Amphur Sattahip, because there were a lot of people that made it easy to solicit money.

Within 1 week, the monks could solicit money for 10,000 THB, and then would return to Cambodia to give money to their families, and come back to Sattahip to solicit money again.

Initially, the police restrained the 4 ex-monks, along with the seized cash and mobile phones, to send to the investigation officer of Sattahip police station to prosecute according to the law, and will later send them back to Cambodia.
