A taxi minivan driver fell asleep at the wheel and rammed into a parked police truck in front of a Sattahip police security box. A police officer who was sleeping inside said luckily the parked truck had stopped the minivan from crashing into the security box and possibly killing him.

SATTAHIP – April 7, 2013, [PDN]; at 12:30 a.m., a report of a van hitting the police security box was received by Pol. Lt. Capt. Sinsamut Boontassana, detective officer of the shift, of Sattahip police station.

The incident occurred at the police security box at Bantaothan traffic light junction, Pattaya –Sattahip route, moo 4, Chonburi. At the scene, officers found a white Toyota minivan had rammed into the rear of a police vehicle, an Isuzu pickup truck.

The front of the minivan was totally damaged by the collision, which also knocked down the roof structure of the traffic-light control cabinet. A destroyed flowerpot also lay scattered in pieces on the ground.

The minivan driver had only minor injuries. He was identified as Mr. Kanawut Sukyanudit, 41 years old, living in Nongprue, Banglamung, Chonburi.

Mr. Kanawut told police that he was driving from Pattaya to Sattahip to pick up a client to take him home. But when he reached the area of the police security box, he felt asleep at the wheel. But he was startled awake by his van crashing into the police truck at the roadside.

Pol. Sen. Serg. Maj. Supap Seesuk, the leader of Bantaothan security box, said that at the time of the collision, he had been sleeping in the security box. When he heard the very loud sound of the crash, he jumped in shock and instinctively dropped to the floor, because he thought a car had hit the security box,

Then he went out to check, and found that the police vehicle parked in front of the box was hit and totally damaged. He said it was lucky that he had parked the pickup truck there to prepare to patrol in the late night, because it absorbed the collision of the runaway van, and diverted its direction. He felt grateful to have survived.

Pol. Lt. Capt. Sinsamut Boontassana, detective of the shift, wrote in the police journal, and after questioning the driver, made him take an alcohol test. He informed the driver that he will be charged with careless driving that caused damage to government property.
