What do you think about Pattaya ? Is that Pattaya is in the same position than Bangkok ?

remember reading about this some time ago,  it is because it is a city under sea level or close to it.  and some villages/ towns between Bkk city and the coast are already suffering near year round flooding.

Yes knew this was fact a long time ago..Bkk was bulit on swamp land and the building are slowly sinking.

Even the weight of the skyscrapers, constantly on the rise in a conurbation in the throes of perpetual change is contributing to Bangkok's gradual immersion. Much of the metropolis is now below sea level and the ground is subsiding by 1.5 to 5cm a year. Among the more radical proposals being suggested to fix the situation is the construction of a massive 100 kilometer dike right across the Gulf of Thailand from Hua Hin to Pattaya.

Yes knew this was fact a long time ago..Bkk was bulit on swamp land and the building are slowly sinking.Even the weight of the skyscrapers, constantly on the rise in a conurbation in the throes of perpetual change is contributing to Bangkok's gradual immersion. Much of the metropolis is now below sea level and the ground is subsiding by 1.5 to 5cm a year. Among the more radical proposals being suggested to fix the situation is the construction of a massive 100 kilometer dike right across the Gulf of Thailand from Hua Hin to Pattaya.

I just glad that there is at least some science behind this instead of the usual ramble of climate change fan boys....

 

Perhaps Bangkok will have spend billions on a flood defence barrier like London.

The politicians are already counting the millions of baht they are gonna siphon off this idea.

 No, they would simply anchor a thousand tug boats with their propellers facing the dyke wall to spray the water over the wall.

 

Hey it worked to increase river flow during the floods so I don't see why it wouldn't work in this application.

Can just see all the bkk mongers going to nana in a boat with there snorkel and masks.   

The rate of subsidence is up to 7cm per year in some of the outer areas. That is why the out flow from mant of the drainage system (Klongs) gets pumped UP and into the Chaophraya as some of the areas are subsiding faster than the Chaophraya.

Putting the dam across the golf would stop tidal surges - BUT as mentioned above will stop the river emptying - catch 22.

One reason so many Bankokians are buying up Pattaya condos is for their retirement in a flood mitigated environment.

A lot of the developers that are moving in here now like Raymond Land (spelling?) are traditional BKK developers who are aware of the issues and planing on cashing in on the problem.

 

As this is a subsidence issue it is way way faster than sea level rise - so Pattaya should be safe for the next 50 years ++ provided storms don't drive tidal surges more than in the past.

The wise choice would be land on the dark side which seems to start at about 20 mtrs above sea levell and rises.

The Gulf of Thailand is a little bit bigger than the river Thames. and i don't believe London sits below sealevel.

There is also the danger of an earthquake 

as Bangkok is not far from active lines

Yes, water comes from North not the other way. Building dykes in Gulf of Thailand, don't make sense.

Unless they are worry about tsunami, and that's not the case.

All the talk of rising sea waters etc is immaterial to the problem of flooding in Bangkok.

 

A quick look at the topographical map of Thailand tells the story. 

 

The country has highlands in the north which extend down the west coast and in the east making a natural funnel channelling water to the coast down the Chao Phraya river.  When the monsoons hit billions of cubic meters of water are pour onto the central plains and into the river which under normal circumstances needs to empty through the river mouth which Bangkok surrounds.

 

 

The Thai government has set up series of Dams which allow it to manage the river flow to stop Bangkok flooding every year but last year these dams were not enough or badly managed causing flooding nort of Bangkok. A couple of big storms and things go out of control  and the flood gates were litterally opened allowing too much water into Bangkok. It this wasn’t done then the lands north of Bangkok would have beeen a disaster area.

 

It is not just Bangkok that has this kind of problem. In Australia the City of Brisbane faces this every year and last year things got out of hand and  many people died.

 

I hope that lessons are learned and new tools are used to manage the floods but mother nature has a way of humbling us so I expect floods in the future.

 

 

I've also been hearing this for many years.  True of false I still plan on moving forward with my plan to purchase property in both cities. If all goes well, I plan on making so much money by then it won't matter! On the upside, It could bring property prices down in Bangkok?  I think it's a good time to purchase property in Pattaya.  Buy now & when shit hits the fan in Bangkok real estate in Pattaya should sky rocket.  I think(HOPE) Pattaya will be fine. Jomtien would be a wise investment.  Above sea level...

Does anyone else see the massive irony in Thailand building a 100 kilometer dike? I'm chuckling from bad dike/dyke jokes right now.

Sadly too many people are uninformed/misinformed about the already scientifically documented effects of global warming.  Sea levels are rising universally due to the shrinking of the polar ice regions as average global temperatures rise largely due to the effects of huge amounts of pollutants released into the atmosphere since the dawn of the industrial age as well as the natural cycles the earth experiences.  There have been MANY "ice ages" followed by times of global warmth.  We have merely accelerated the rate in the past couple of centuries.  Fortunately the rate is still relatively slow in terms of human lifespan and it is unlikely that we will see much change in our lifetimes.  And as usual mankind will find a way to cope.

 

Think about this.  How many major metropolises are port cities who were founded on/thrived by their proximity to the sea and for how long has sea transport been a major force in civilization?  A few hundred years?  They ALL face the prospect of being inundated in time but as technology advances I expect (HOPE?) that solutions will be devised.  Nature cannot be stopped, but it can inspire methods of dealing with the problems it causes for us.
