Jim Bolen is a legend. He led over 40 covert, top secret missions to the Ho Chi Minh Trail as a "SOG" team leader, and was extracted from the jungle from over 30 of those missions under fire,surrounded by enemy and cut off deep behind enemy lines.

I have done a series of great interviews with Jim, and it was a perfect fit because Part 1 of my novel, BACK, follows a SOG team mission into Laos, although Jim did it for real - and survived against incredible odds.

It would be hard for any normal person not to see Jim Bolen's statement, “I think that I have killed people with every kind of weapon...and none were as good as the CAR-15” as the ravings of a dangerous psychopath. 

 

This is something to be proud of, to mention to anyone, even to speak aloud? I ask, what would your mother think about that statement, Jim? 

 

Human beings are hardwired not to kill, an impediment governments work so hard to overcome with patriotism. 

 

Jim's statement is the stuff of tortured nightmare. Those 'kills' were people, Jim.

 

The American war on Vietnam was undeclared and illegal. American wars on Laos and Cambodia were not only illegal but secret from the very taxpayers funding them. When wars are not legal, that makes soldiers murderers.

 

Just imagine an army invading your home. In the real world, that's called home invasion.

 

The brutality and pointlessness of war hasn't changed since Vietnam. The US is still convincing the young and stupid, underprivileged, undereducated, kids of colour, to go to poor countries and murder their inhabitants. Don’t even need a draft anymore, just fund war instead of education and cripple the civilian economy so there are no jobs for young people.

 

Have our wars solved anything, ever? Is the world a better place at all after the slaughter of Koreans, Vietnamese, Laotians, Cambodians, Afghanis, Iraqis? Lots of other places, too, where CIA SOG assassination and destabilisation teams are still murdering in secret.

 

If Jim Bolen has visited his personal killing fields, been greeted with a smile, served a cold beer and eaten at table with locals, I can only hope he is too ashamed to finish his meal.

 

Guts and glory? No—terror and rape and blood.

 

It’s because of soldiers like Jim Bolen that the rest of the world hates us.

 

The Vietnam War changed my life, too. The smart kids went to prison or Canada. I did both, not out of cowardice but so I wouldn’t have to kill.
