Police detained a drunken man wearing monk’s robes in front of a Pattaya restaurant, after people complained he smelled bad and was acting obnoxious. The suspect was taken to Chaimongkhol temple, where the angry Abbot denounced him as a fake monk and had him forcibly disrobed.

PATTAYA – April 4, 2013 [PDN]; At 1 a.m., local residents complained of a man dressed like a monk being drunk and bothering people. Responding to the complaint were the police of Pattaya police station and officers from the Civil Defense Volunteer department.

The drunken suspect was in front of Nong Pochana restaurant on the side of Sukhumvit Road, Moo 12 Tambon Nong Preu, Amphur Banglamung, Chonburi province.

When officers arrived at the restaurant, they found a man, age approximately 35-40, with a shaved head and dressed like a monk. He was standing and drunkenly shouting with a loud noise. He had a bad smell of his body, which the people and customers were scared of him and didn’t dare to come close to him.

So the officers asked to inspect the documents that showed he is a monk. But the man didn’t have any, and also didn’t have an identity card. But the drunk man claimed he is really a monk from Nongbualamphu province, and he was on a pilgrimage and had erected a shelter in the middle of the forest in Soi Sukhumvit 58.

So the police went to inspect in the middle of forest. Officers had to walk almost 1 km, until they until found the monk’s shelter built with pieces of wood and used as a place to sleep. The police also found the monk’s bag with 2-3 packs of instant food, an F.M. radio, cartoon books, a calendar, a list of illegal lottery numbers, and 1 set of a monk’s alms-bowl.

The police restrained the suspect along with his possessions, and took him to see monk Phisaljariyaphiwat, the Abbot of Chaimongkhol temple, the Lord Abbot of Tambon Na Kleu, to inspect and punish him.

The head monk Phisaljariyaphiwat prepared to get the bad monk to leave the monkhood. But he saw that this monk had a bad smell of liquor, and argued with him and didn’t consent to leave the monkhood.

So monk Phisaljariyaphiwat got angry so much, he let the temple boy and police remove the monk’s robes and put on ordinary clothes like the local people, because the Abbot didn’t believe the drunk man is really a monk. The Abbot believed this man was a fake monk who wandered to ask for food and money from the local people in the area.
