Are you insured when you are passenger on a motorbike taxi and something happens?

 

Or are you dependent on your travel insure?

Without knowing the real answer, I will say it is highly unlikely that moto-taxi drivers have that kind of insurance.

 

If they did, they'd probably find a successful way of blaming any accident on you anyway.

Your travel insurance will probably include moto taxis in your policy but you need to be careful when making a claim as they will ask if you were wearing a crash helmet, were you drunk, was the driver registered etc.

 

Double check before you purchase travel insurance.

Know a girl who runs a massage shop,  her boyfriend is a moto taxi driver,   every time he passes the shop he stops for a bottle of beer and a blast at the sisha pipe the girls are constantly smoking. After a 5 minute pit stop he was off again ferrying passengers.

I witnessed him do this every day over a three week period.

That's why i put it up Steven , seen it several times . Sang som bottle going round when they sit together and 5 minutes later they drive of again .

I checked this with my travel insurance last year and for both myself riding a hired scooter and being passenger on a motorbike taxi i was covered for any medical expenses from an accident providing it was on the road (not dirt tracks) and i was wearing a helmet.

This was with BUPA

you can ask for motorbike travel to be added to your travel insurance but there will be a premium to pay.

I always check my travel insurance now after I broke my arm falling off a baht bus when I was pissed and most policys offered in UK do not cover baht busses (no seatbelt is the normal get out clause) or travel in/ on vehicles with three or less wheels.

 

I always read the small print now before I buy, Virgin have been the best the last few years for covering loads of extra activities for a minimum of extra cost.

They all carry a no fault policy

You can be sure that the motorbike taxi will carry any kind of insurance and that if you read the fine print the majority of travel insurance policies prohibit any kind of use of two wheeled vehicles (some even bicycles) while on holiday.  I was looking for a policy for my brother and had lots of trouble finding a travel insurance policy that covered motorcycle riding.  Eventually I found one that was labeled a sports travel policy that covered him as the driver or pillion.

 

You can do a search for AA insure who are the guys that eventually got me sorted out.

I have checked a couple of policies and they do cover you on motorbikes as long as the rider is licensed to do ride in the country that the accident takes place. How many of them have a license? I have no idea but I guarantee that not all of them do.

Yes, I'm insured when something happens with me on the beach.

 

I've read some insurance policies and they explicitly states I'm not insured riding a two wheeler with an engine bigger then 50cc.

 

Back to you.

Come on, do you really think the "motorcy" taxi is going to take out an insurance for his passengers

That's why I'm also asking if my travel insurance is covering if something happens...

 

Seems you have to be careful if you want to be insured for motorbike (taxi) accidents...

. Dave I'm the same in aust if bike is more than 125 cc no insurance under that I'm covered

to b on safe side pay xtra 4bike insurance and u are covered,thats wat i do and i dont hire bikes,hardly get on motor  bike taxis either,but if i do i know i'm covered 4sure,

Please understand that I have no clue but just know that in thailand it is totally up to me to arrange my own insurance.

 

as one of the joys of thailand is that it is up to us to decide what risks to take it would be a bit rich to expect  the cotton wool health and safety (and pricing) we might get at home.

The best insurance is to try to avoid motorbikes.  I know many people that have permanent injuries from riding on the back of motorbikes in Thailand.

 

I was actually thinking of buying my own secure helmet for the times I do ride.

 

When I ride, and speaking Thai helps, I tell them:

• Do not rush
• Ride safely
• Do not exceed 40 km/hr

I also like to be careful on the baht buses as there are no seatbelts and a small collision even at low speeds can be threatening.

 

I wish they would get rid of the baht buses altogether and run real buses circulating the main areas.  This would certainly be more efficient, better for traffic, and carbon footprint.  However, this is Pattaya.
