Rayong Homeowner Will Pay For Raging Oil Inferno

The owner of a Rayong house used to store illegal fuel oil agreed to pay for damages resulting from a big fire that engulfed two other homes. No one was injured in the fire, which began when a worker’s dropped cigarette ignited spilled fuel oil. Criminal charges are pending.

SATTAHIP – March 14, 2013 [PDN]; The business owner who stockpiled illegal purchases of fuel oil in a Plutaluang home that caught fire has agreed to pay the damages resulting from the blaze.

Pol. Col. Chaosiri Boonsiriyothin, director of Plutaluang police station, revealed that the fuel exploded and caused a total of 3 houses to burn in the low-cost housing project village, Plutaluang 2. No one was injured in the fire.

The arrested homeowner, Mr. Jatupong Longsarn, 49 years old, did not live in the house where the benzyl oil was stored. His listed address is in Bantoong, Tabma, Muangrayong, Rayong.

Mr. Jatupong, who was not at the house when it was burning, later surrendered himself to police. However, the detectives let him go so he could attend to some immediate business, after it was agreed he would return to be questioned later.

Mr. Jatupong confessed that the oil was benzene contained in a modified tank on the pickup bed of a pick-up truck, with a capacity of more than 1,000 liters. He said he bought the oil from a transferring truck driver in Rayong for 20 baht per liter.

Mr. Jatupong claimed that he wasn’t willing to re-sell the oil, but just wanted to use it as fuel. He was willing to take all the responsibility for all the damage costs of the fire.

Police also arrested an employee of Mr. Jatupong, identified as Mr. Adul Kamapanai, 35 years old, from Mahasarakarm. He was the caretaker of the house and oversaw the storage of the oil.

He was inside the house when the fire erupted, after two other workers unloading 200-liter tanks outside the house accidentally dropped one of the tanks on the ground. This caused some oil to spill on the ground, which ignited after a startled worker dropped his burning cigarette.

Mr. Adul was arrested when he had returned to the house to retrieve some documents, and he gave his testimony to police like the owner. But no one got injured and died from the fire, because the two adjacent houses that also caught fire were unoccupied.

The crime scene also did not contain the incriminating evidence of the illegal oil, which presumably was all burnt by the fire.

As for any criminal charges against the suspects, police are still undergoing the investigation procedure and waiting for the lab test results from the Scientific Crime Detection Division.

Police expect to initially charge the suspects with being responsible for the fire that burned people’s house and damaged their properties.
