Tam Boon & Greeting New Neighbors

Recommended Posts

All,

Just bought a new house with Thai wife. We will move in next month and would like to know the proper way to intrduce ourselves to our new neighbors.  The neighborhood is mostly expats with Thai wives.  We plan to have a Tam Boon ceremony but not sure the proper etiquette for the neighbors.

The for any advice.

We got nine monks in for the house-blessing ceremony and followed that with a buffet + drinks for the immediate neighbours and a few relatives (separate table for the monks).  No expats in our vicinity - Thai middle-class professional types.

We also slipped a box of beer and a bottle of whiskey to the builders on their last day on-site.

A good time was had by all, but make sure your knees are in good shape for the ceremony.........

Thanks for the advice.  The house is complete but we dont move in until next month.  The wife keeps adding things to the ceremony like we give money in envelopes to each monk (how much is recommended?. Candles, cushions, string, Buddha Statue, bowl of water, ect...   We have to feed the monks and they eat first and leave before anyone else eats. What kind of food is suggested?  I am returning to work (out of country) and will return next month when the transfer takes place.  I asked my wife to find the local wat to our home and get details and requirements for a proper Tam Boon.

We didn't pass money directly to the monks

Instead we gave them a portable water-tank for their (relatively poor) temple, sweaters and rice for the kids in the temple orphanage  and some monk clothing bought from a shop in the provincial capital that sells Buddhist temple paraphernalia.

The cushions etc  all arrived with the monks and were set up for them by the 'civilian' temple gopher who brought them along in his pick-up.  We gave him some cash - can't recall the amount, but it wasn't very much at all.

After the formal ceremony. the head monk had 1:1 sessions with some of the guests, all of whom gave money for the temple.

Hope this helps.
