Laser pointer prices

I got a friend that wants me to bring him back one of those crazy laser pointers that can light stuff on fire. Anyone know what the current asking prices are for them? I forget what the guy selling them told me last trip since I wasn't interested in buying one.

What is the US law (or Japanese law if that is where you are taking it to) regarding the importing of lasers that strong?

They range from 200 to 3000 baht.

 

The problem is that the 200 baht ones are probably not strong enough to burn stuff and the 3000 baht ones have probably been hacked and although will be strong enough they will burn out quickly.

 

In both cases they are probably chucking out a lot of harmful light in the IR spectrum so you should really wear some form of eye protection when using them (not cool I know)

 

It really is pot luck.

 

They can be bought quite cheap on eBay.... they may be a more suitable option.

Yea last time I was in patts the guy I bought one of the green laser pointers from pulled out a bigger one with a pink color laser and lit my cigarette with it in about 15 seconds. Also the laws aren't a big deal because I'm probably going to mail it back to my friends address or disassemble it to get it through customs even tho they rarely check stuff coming into Japan if your stuff gets through the scanners ok. My friend brought a switch blade back last trip, which are highly illegal in Japan lol

Hint:

At the airport: Split part in the individual parts. encamped batteries and laser separately. Then you have no problems with the airport police and customs.
