A friend has 40 minute's to get off a flight from Tokyo and on one to Dublin.

Do you think this is possible and if so could you give a few directions as they

haven't flew through Copenhagen before.

I would say its not possible.

When arriving from outside EU they need to pass imigration and this alone might take 20-30 minuts.

If the baggage has to be collected and checked in again then just forget it.

On arrival in the non-schengen area you will have to pass through immigration which can take anywhere from zero to twenty minutes. Then a brisk 10 minute walk to you next gate assuming you have no checked bagage.

 

I think it is very tight, you might get lucky but you might also risk a long wait.

 

I would be surprised if the airline would actually sell you the trip unless you book it as two separate tickets - in which case you are on your own if you miss the flight.

Moved through Copenhagen airport many times - OP's pal has no chance at all of making his Dublin flight for all the reasons given above.

To those add the fact that the incoming flight from Tokyo is likely to be a BIG plane with LOTS of passengers. First to deplane will be 1st class, then business, then - only then - folks in steerage. Adds a lot to the notional landing time.

They're flying with SAS (assuming that airline doesn't go bust) and both tickets were booked jointly

through ebooker's so I guess if the worst happens they'll have to put her on the next available flight.

Although saying that, the other year flying from Bangkok to Edinburgh I made a 40 minute transfer

in Paris CDG and that involved a short train ride so ya never know.

All airports have a "minimum connection time" which in CPH is 40 min. meaning that the travel agencies are not allowed to sell tickets if the minimum time is not ok. Having worked in CPH i still think it can be very tight coming from outside EU and going to an EU Country. You have to pass through immigration but the waiting time is not as long for passengers in transit as it is for those with CPH as final destination. Your friend will arrive at finger C (the only for flights to/from non-EU-countries) and departing to Dublin with SAS will most likely be from finger B which is not so far away (5-10 min walk depending of the gate no). It could also be finger D but that is more or less same distance. Only problem is finger A which is a much longer walk, but SAS rarely have departures from that finger.

 

I still think it could be very tight but doable. Anyway as the ticket has been bought with SAS as two connecting flights - yes SAS would have to book your friend on the next available (SK) flight to Dublin. If i am right the flight from Tokyo will arrive 04.05 pm and the late SAS flight to Dublin is 04.50 so yoyr friend has 45 min. to get to the gate of the connecting flight.

Edit: Gates normally closes 20 min before STD but all airlines are informed about transitting passengers and it happens that staff are waiting at the gate of incoming flight to escort passengers to the departure gate.

BTW - the luggage will have been checked in through to final destination - and transferred from the incoming- to the outbound flight, so the airline will do their outmost to get the passenger onboard - otherwise they will have to face a delay as they must find the luggage of a missing passenger and unload it from the plane.
