A Kasikorn bank in Ban Chang was robbed by a masked man who escaped with 370,000 baht. He had waited about 20 minutes for his turn to see the teller. He pulled out a gun and handed her a note demanding money. He fled in his car into the Ban Chang market.

RAYONG – November 30, 2012 [PDN]; a report of a bank robbery by a masked gunman was received by Pol. Lt. Capt. Supot Saunsorn, officer of the shift, Ban Chang police station. He went to check the scene with Pol. Maj. Gen. Cherdcha Sekanan, commander of Rayong police station; and a detective team.

The robbery was reported by the staff of Kasikorn bank, Ban Chang branch. They said a masked man had robbed a teller after waiting for his turn. The robber had a gun of unknown caliber that he had pointed at the teller, and escaped with 370,000 baht. The thief may have known that the bank had no security guard. The bandit was last seen driving into the Ban Chang market in his car, a black Mitsubishi Pajero with no license plate.

Other witnesses told police that a man wearing a mask had taken ticket stub from the dispenser to wait for the next available teller. After he waited about 20 minutes, it was his turn. When he reached the counter, the masked man passed the teller a note that said, “Give me all your money, I have a gun.” The masked man then took out his gun, which frightened the staff.

The staff took all the available money and put it in a white bag and gave it to him. But the teller had selected only 100-baht bank notes, so that it looked like a large amount. Meanwhile she kept the 500 and 1,000 bank notes hidden in the drawer.

The other staff members had walked to the safe and were trying to put money inside. But the man told the staff to bring the money to him. When his white bag was full, the robber then rushed out of the bank and escaped with about 370,000 baht.

Police questioned a fruit merchant standing outside the bank, Mr. Thongchai Thamdee, age 59, a Ban Chang resident. He told police he had seen the man park his car in the soi beside the bank. Then the man got out the car with a white bag and went into the bank. The man wore a mask that covered his nose and mouth.

The masked man looked quite abnormal, Mr. Thongchai said. He was about 170 cms tall and skinny. The masked man was in the bank for about 30 minutes, but then walked out fast, said Mr. Thongchai, who also heard the noises from the frightened people. So he knew that a thief had just robbed the bank.

Police inspected the bank’s CCTV footage, as well as the CCTVs in the Ban Chang market. Pol. Maj. Gen. Cherchai Sekana said the man could not be missed by police, because there were CCTVs around the town.

From the eyewitness descriptions, the bank robber didn’t appear to be a professional, the commander said. It appears that the robber was probably a gambling or drug addict who needed to pay a debt. The commander said he thought it will not be long before police find the suspect.

Glad nobody got hurt, but the lackadaisical characteristics of the k-bank towards security was always going to make one of its branches an easy target. I bet the thai customers sitting down having a chat with the customer service staff didn't even bat an eyelid when events unfolded.

I'm guessing/betting that it was one of those typical surgical masks people use to prevent from getting other people sick.

 

People don't give a second look to people wearing them
