starting a restaurant in pattaya

You need a chef mate, that's what you need :)

One simple question? have you ever, owned or run a restaurant before.

As a previous restaurant owner, I would not wish that fate on my enemy, especially in a foreign country. I hope you have really thought this through.

I have to disagree with the usual doom and gloom merchants that turn up whenever opening a business is mentioned.

Any business, whatever the sector, if well conceived and executed will make money, and yes it's a big advantage to have some previous experience.

I've been a chef since I left school and opened my restaurant in kent 8 years ago and stopped working 4 years ago at age 37.... It makes a lot of money, enough for me to live in thailand and have a great lifestyle...BUT it takes a lot of hard work and perseverence to get to that stage.

I think if you want people to put the effort into replying to you, you should do the same with more details about yourself, budget, type, size, location, experience etc etc

st happy chicken on soi lenqui/bauwkauw is a franchise.ive been curious about the cost of it.lm just nosey but if anyone knows please tell.

don't forget about good accountant, the best one would be a trustable thai or farang

why dont you start this thread as an account of how the business goes from start to finish and try and get it tagged if any good as it could give hints to may members thinking the same thing...like many threads show day by day week by week accounts of building a house maybe you could do that with starting up your business...one observation tho is be a bit more friendly with your replys as all the warnings are being given by people who either know themselves or seen people like you go down the plug hole.

Thailand is like no other place and to compare it to being a sucess in the UK is a bit naieve imho...listen to what the members say and heed the advice without retorts with attitude and IF you know best then to start a thread with do I need a lawyer ? is a bit strange. I wish you well and will follow this thread but listen and heed the advice .Would love to see it develop from how you found the place what your plans are, start up costs, plans for the place etc to accountants, staffing opening day etc...may be a winner of a thread and again I dont want this reply to sound condescending and wish you chokh Dee with your plans and will follow this with great interest.......

before u start, make sure u have 6 months money AFTER u set up everything and count on making not one baht.in that 6 months an u stand a chnace

DO not open it cause ur gf wants a businnes

DO not open unless u plan on being there all the time

IN all my years here i have had one business, Set up a new york style deli in Patong in 1989,

Ran it for 3 months and sold it never again.

We had all the right equipment, slicers.electronic scales, air con near the bars, Only on eof ts kind in the whole area, etc etc

after the first month i couldn't sit there all the time as it was BORING.

each sandwich was 125 grms

each night when we opened i would weigh the meat

each night weight the meat, count the tickets and subtract.

keep starting with 800 or so grms of each meat, end of night, sometimes one sometimes two sandwichs sold yet only 350 grms of meat left.

"What happened to the rest of the meat", i asked,

"SEE AY" ( spoiled) right

after a month of that fuck it....

I'd read "Jasmine Fever: Confessions of a jaded expat in Thailand" by the late, former New York chef and restaurant owner turned Phuket resident Frank Visakay. Frank's book highlights a number of expat-owned businesses Phuket with observations as to why they failed or succeeded. As might be expected, experience, good planning and hard work are required for success. Good luck.
