A toddler less than 2 years old was sitting in the front of his uncle’s motorbike, but accidentally twisted the handlebar accelerator. The motorbike surged forward as the man’s startled wife yanked the child off. The motorbike collided with a speeding truck and killed the uncle.

SRIRACHA – 29 November, 2012 [PDN]; A report of a fatal collision involving a motorbike and a 10-wheel truck was received by Pol. Lt. Col. Pholkrit Khamsathien, Inspector on duty, Borwin police station, Amphur Sriracha, Chonburi province. He went to check the scene with the rescue officer from Peaw Yeang Tai, Sriracha.

The incident occurred at the road route Sriracha-Borwin, Khao Khayai Saengwimarn Moo 5, Tambon Borwin, Amphur Sriracha. At the scene, police found the body of Mr. Somchai Malithong, age 45, from Tambon Nongiroon, Amphur Baan Beung, Chonburi province.

Mr. Somchai was lying with turned the face down and his head was gashed open. He had died instantly from a broken neck. Nearby was his motorbike, a Honda Wave 100, that had collided with a 10-wheel Isuzu truck. Both vehicles sustained severe damage to their front ends.

The truck belonged to Thor Thanaphat Steel Co., Ltd. The driver, Mr. Somjit Chutuam, age 31, was waiting for the police without escaping.

Mr. Somjit told police that he was driving his truck from Sriracha to Borwin. Then the motorbike had suddenly come out from the soi and crossed in front of his truck’s path. He tried to brake, but could not stop in time because he was going too fast. So his truck collided with the motorbike violently.

Police questioned the victim’s wife, Mrs. Varaporn Darachai, age 40. She said that she and her husband were about to leave for work on his motorbike. They also brought their nephew, Arnut Malithong, who is 1-year and 5-months old, to sit in front of the motorbike. Arnut’s relatives live across the street from them.

However, Mr. Somchai had turned to talk to her as she was about to get on the motorbike. Meanwhile, their nephew grabbed and twisted the accelerator while the engine was turned on. So the motorbike suddenly surged forward.

She was so frightened that she instantly reacted and pulled Arnut from the motorbike. But the motorbike with Mr. Somchai still on it crossed in front of the 10-wheel truck and collided violently with it.

It was lucky that the boy Arnut had survived, she said. Her nephew was so frightened and crying a lot, but it was the innocence of the boy Arnut who caused the accident and his uncle to die.

The police released the body to the care of the rescue officer to take to Aow Udom hospital for an autopsy. Police restrained the truck driver Mr. Somjit for further questioning, as well as Mrs. Varaporn, to determine if charges would be filed.
