Masked Men Rob Navy Officer In Broad Daylight

Four men in a pickup truck wearing balaclava masks cut off another truck driven by a navy officer, who was transporting 98,000 THB cash to make a payment. Two men assaulted him with a metal rod while the others held him at gunpoint and stole the cash. Police assume someone tipped off the robbers that the victim would be carrying a lot of money.

SATTAHIP – November 26, 2012 [PDN]; at 1:30 p.m., a Navy petty officer reported being robbed by four men at gunpoint to Pol. Sub. Lt. Ubol Wongkhamchai, investigation officer, Sattahip police station.

The officer went to check the scene along with Pol. Col. Chonnapat Nawalak, Superintendent, Sattahip police station; Pol. Lt. Col. Prakorb Saengpring, Deputy Superintendent; Pol. Lt. Col. Niphon Pomsanarm, Deputy Superintendent; Pol. Lt. Col. Thapanat Chayarnphat, Inspector; and the detective police team.

The victim was identified Chief Petty Officer First Class Manit Tanjangreed, age 38, with the Department of Hydrography, Navy, a resident of Tambon Plutaluang, Amphur Sattahip, Chonburi province.

He was waiting for the police alongside his parked Toyota Vigo pickup truck. He had been robbed at the km 4 highway marker near Moo 2 in Tambon Sattahip.

The victim was still badly shaken from the violent robbery. There were bruises on his face and body from being assaulted during the holdup. Police inspecting the nearby bushes discovered traces of the struggle that occurred.

Mr. Manit said the robbers stole 98,000 THB cash and a gold ring with a weight of 2 saleung. The police took photographs for evidence, and later took the testimony of the victim at the Sattahip police station.

Mr. Manit told police he had withdrawn a large amount of cash from the bank to pay a debt at the cooperative unit, and had left his office in his pickup truck. Later he was followed by a black, 4-door Isuzu Dmax pickup truck with no license plate.

The tailing truck sped up to overtake him, then swerved in front of his truck to force him to stop. Then four men wearing balaclavas got off the pickup truck. Two of them holding guns in their hands.

Suddenly two robbers dragged Mr. Manit from his truck, and punched him and struck him with a metal rod. The other two robbers pointed their guns at Mr. Manit’s head to force him not to resist. The robbers then stole all of the money in the drawer and a gold ring before escaping.

After receiving the robbery report, the police broadcasted a description of the robbers and their vehicle by radio communication, but there was no trace of them.

Pol. Col. Chonnapat Nawalak said the armed holdup was a serious offense because the victim is a government officer in uniform. The violent robbery also occurred in broad daylight, showing that the robbers did not care whether the people in passing cars saw them.

Police assumed the robbers had inside information from people who worked with the victim. So the robbers knew Mr. Manit would be carrying a lot of money.

The police commander assigned the detective police team to follow up to arrest the group of robbers to prosecute according to the law.
