Hi Guys....I`m planning my 1st trip to LOS in May 2013. From what I understand that is smack dab in the middle of the rainy season. I wish I hadn`t now but I watched a Discovery Channel show about Dengue Fever. Now I`m wondering if any BM`s have ever contracted this disease while on holiday?

From what I saw there is no treatment and you just have to tuff it out for 2 weeks until your body`s immune system fights off the bad bugs.To make things worse I noticed a news bulletin that stted the cases of Dengue fever in the Phillipines are up by 25% this year.

 

So i`m just wondering if I should be too concerned or not?

Been to Thailand loads of times, never met anyone who has had it.Maybe i'm just lucky.

Not personally but a friend of mine BM Barstool got dengue a few months back. He was in a bad way for a week or 2.

 

But May isn't the rainy season. More like the hottest and driest period. Rainy season is now - Sep-Nov. But doesn't really matter with dengue as far as I know.

I caught it in Pattaya last April.Was fine when i went to bed then woke up in the night with all my body aching,like my bones aching.By the morning i felt like death and absolutely freezing cold though it was 37c outside i had to stay in bed with a duvet over me.I gradually got worse over the next 2 days.Living on my own and didnt have any food in,just had to lie there.Had this awful pain behind my eyes which when i researched all my symptoms on the internet was a tell tale sign of Dengue.Woke up the next day covered in a bright red rash all over,thats how i knew what i had before i went to hospital.After about 5 days i managed to struggle out of bed and get on the bike to drive myself to hospital where they confirmed what i knew already.Gave me some shots etc which dont do any good anyway.Went back home and was about 3 weeks or so before i felt 100% again.I was so ill i thought i was gonna die.Its not a nice thing to have i defininately got it in Pattaya as i never left the place.

It is definitely a concern, and people do catch it in Pattaya. All you can do is try to avoid mosquito bites during the day when the ones who spread dengue fever are out biting I believe. Been living here 2 years and luckily have never caught it even though I do get mosquito bites pretty often. I think as a short term tourist your chances are pretty slim of getting it in Pattaya.

It's definitely a worry, particularly for those of us who live here. Not much that you can do to prevent it, other than to make sure you don't get bitten by a daytime mosquito. Socks & shoes, long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt, with gloves and a hat should do it.

 

Or just take your chances like everyone else!

Yes you gotta do all you can to avoid mosquito bites, certainly use an effective repellant, I've a friend in Pattaya right now bed ridden with all the symptoms of Dengue Fever. It certainly seems to becoming more and prevalent in Thailand and especially Pattaya with all the standing water at the moment.

I recall reading some articles in the Pattaya Mail recently by Dr Ian Corness.

I had Dengue Fever about 2 weeks ago; laid me low for about 12 days. Woke up one morning - headache, aching all over, shivers, sore throat / dry mouth, sick feeling, loss of appetite. After a few days the rash came, particularly arms, hands and lower legs and itchy skin. Took me 3/4 days to discover what I had, just took paracetamol and strepsols for my throat, and lots of tea.

Guess I was kind of lucky, may be I am a bit fitter than most, as quite a few people do end up in hospital. At least 6 more cases in the last month on my condo estate. Not much you can do about it really, only takes one bite.

I have lived here for 8 yrs and the little bastards love me but I got away with it up until 2 months ago, Its very uncomfortable and at least a week a right shitty feeling but not much more than a flu bug, its just unlucky if you get bit by a carrier.

My wifes 2 nieces ( 20 & 22) who work for and live with us had it 1st and I then got it, the lads joked that I got it from sniffing their underwear but no defo a Mozzy.

If you get bit as a rule put the spray etc on, its only the daytime Mozzy thats the carrier so evenings your ok,.

There are different strains of it and it also does effect people differently depending on their immune system, possible previous immunity to one of the other strains can have an effect as well. Best to stay away from anyone who has it as the mosquito has to bite a person (or animal?) that has it and then you for you to get it. Probably how Daveo got it.

I got it a few years earlier, and it also started with the pain behind the eyes. Like when you fell asleep, but wake up after a minute. Felt very weak for a couple of days, but no rash on the skin, and the pain in the bones and muscles not so bad. Had a couple of slipped discs to compare with, not the same pain. Back to normal in less than a week.

The first infection is usually survivable, but if you get bit by another subtype a second time, your immune response is fucked up because it will concentrate on producing antibodies for the first type, but those will do fuck all against the new strain. So Daveo, better buy yourself a jihab or something. :-)

A friend in my building had it badly recently. Six days in BKK Pattaya Hospital. 65,000 baht bill for treatment. He said hospital diagnosis and care were first rate.

I've lived here 6+ years, had it twice. Both times very bad flu-like symptoms getting worse progressively, second time required hospitalization for 2 nights. Please note that there are four distinct strains of dengue. Catching one immunizes you against THAT strain in the future but not the others. Reactions can range considerably but bear in mind that dengue was a leading killer of Allied POWs in WWII. Complete information is available online from various med organizations but start with Wikipedia. There are no vaccinations that I am aware of, and as repeatedly noted above the best prevention is a good moskie repellant. As also mentioned Avon Skin So Soft is excellent AND good for your skin. I haven't seen it sold here though.
