A 45-year-old drunken man in Choomporn province climbed through a window to rape a 19-year-old nursing mother. But he failed to do so, and eluded capture by leaping into the village pond where he died. It was assumed he died because of drunkenness and exhaustion running from pursuers.

CHOOMPORN – November 25, 2012 [PDN]; a report of a man attempting to rape a woman and then escaping into a pond was received by Pol. Lt. Col. Dechbandit Dulkeree, inspector on duty, Sawee police station, Choomporn province. He went to check the scene with the doctor of Sawee hospital, the rescue officer from Saichol, and divers to retrieve the corpse.

Notifying the police was Mr. Jermsak Cheunkohsamui, the village chief of Moo 9 Bann Praekhaeng, Tambon Wisaitai, Amphur Sawee, Choomporn province. He said the fleeing man had jumped in the pond and disappeared. They assumed he had died and asked the police to search for him.

The incident occurred in the big pond of village Moo 9 Baan Praekhaeng, about 18 km from Asia road 41, the road route to the Khao Chantoh village-Khao Lak monk house, Moo 9, Tambon Wisaitai, Amphur Sawee.

At the scene, police found more than 100 residents, mostly foreign workers in the area. They were standing and watching along the banks of the big pond, which was about 5 meters deep, 700 meters long and 100 meters wide.

The Saichol rescue divers took more than an hour to locate and bring up the body, identified as Mr. Chaitawat Buabarn, age 45, from Tambon Huafai, Amhur Soongmen, Prae province.

The drowning victim was wearing a collared blue shirt, and green-black camouflage pants. Police estimated the victim had been dead less than 7 hours. There were no traces of injuries or being beaten on his body.

Local residents told police that Mr. Chaitawat worked as a general laborer. He had been married for nearly a year to a woman in Tambon Wisaitai in Amphur Sawee.

However, after Mr. Chaitawat had a quarrel with his wife, he left his house and walked about a kilometer, where he came to a newly-built house that was celebrating with a ceremony. He ask for the liquor to drink, and drank until he got drunk and didn’t consent to go back home. So the owner of the new house let him sit in front of the house alone, and then they closed the house to go to sleep.

Later, Mr. Chaitawat climbed into the house through the window, to try and rape a young mother, age 19, who had just given birth. But the woman shouted for assistance from other people in the house, which made Mr. Chaitawat frightened so he ran away. The relatives of the woman chased Mr. Chaitawat, who decided to jump into the pond, where he drowned immediately.

The relatives assumed that he drowned because he got drunk and there was so much alcohol in his body, and he got so frightened and ran until he was tired, so he was in shock and could not save himself from drowning in the pond.

The police made the record of his death, and sent the corpse to his relatives to perform the religious rites.
