More useless junk on Pattaya’s sidewalks

At last I think I understand now why someone at City hall has dumped “Jomtien Second Road” signs along the length of Thappraya Road.

It isn’t just another questionable  sign project dreamed up for enrichment purposes, nor is it just a mistake, but a very poor attempt at logic.

A twofer - the sidewalk-blocking signs and the metal bus shelters together. This sign appears after Pan Pan restaurant on THAPPRAYA Road.

Thinking along the lines of Pattaya itself, where Beach Road is effectively “First Road”, with Second Road behind it, some genius has decided that the entire length of Thappraya Road should be called Second Road, even though it is really only Jomtien’s “Second Road” from the Hanuman statue southwards, as it runs parallel to Jomtien Beach Road.

For the rest of the way,  from the Hanuman statue into Pattaya, this road should properly be called Thappraya Road, as it has been and forever will be, signs or no  signs to the contrary, as there is no Beach Road running parallel to it, unless the beach access trackway qualifies.

Then we have the gigantic, “helpful” signs pointlessly pointing the way to the beach on signs so huge they block the sidewalk at pedestrian level. There can be no excuse for these, except one, of course.

And to the above mess, we can now add the dodgy-looking metal constructions now being dumped at random along Thappraya Road, masquerading as bus shelters, for buses we don’t (and never will ) have, presumably.

If they were a serious attempt to shelter unhappy customers waiting for a baht bus in the beating sun, they are far too small and too far apart to be of much use, except randomly, given the numbers waiting for baht buses into Pattaya, especially at peak times, weekends and high season.

Also, other bus-related junk – remember the old red signs plonked everywhere in Pattaya in anticipation of a bus service a few years ago? They still litter the sidewalks all over the city.

I am not even bothered about how these schemes are dreamt up, commissioned and paid for, that's not really my business, but an internal City Hall one,  but I do think whenever a new administration is elected, they should allocate funds to wipe away all signs of previous administrations' scams from the sidewalks of our city.

Call it a cost of doing business in Fun Town, and it might free up a lot of space for more up-to-date useless junk to be commissioned as well.
