Thai Driver Crashes And Kills Japanese Boss

A 46-year-old Japanese businessman died instantly when the Toyota Camry he was riding in rear-ended a garbage truck on a motorway. His 50-year-old Thai driver was seriously injured. The Japanese man was the managing director of a Pathumthani company.

CHONBURI – November 22, 2012 [PDN]; at 11 a.m., a report of a luxury car colliding with a garbage truck resulting in a fatal injury was received by Pol. Lt. Col. Suwijak Meeyam, Inspector with the Highway Police.

The accident occurred near the motorway road entrance going toward Bangkok on Moo 1, Tambon Don Hualor, Amphur Muang, Chonburi province.

Police arrived at the scene and discovered a white Toyota Camry with two injured people inside. The car’s front end was severely damaged. Sitting in the driver’s seat was the injured driver, Mr. Somchai Samphao, age 50. He suffered a broken right eyebrow and a broken backbone.

His passenger in the backseat who had died instantly was identified as Mr. Kenji Oto, age 46, nationality Japanese, who had a skull fracture. Mr. Kenji was the managing director of a company in Pathumthani province.

Parked nearby was the 6-wheel garbage truck, a yellow Isuzu model from the Department of Highways, Amphur Phanthong, Chonburi province. The rear of the garbage truck was smashed in from the collision.

Police questioned the garbage truck driver, Mr. Dilok Unakul, age 53. He told police he was driving the garbage truck as usual, when suddenly a car driving at a high speed rear-ended his garbage truck.

Police assumed that the car’s driver, Mr. Somchai, either fell asleep at the wheel, or he may have been trying to avoid an obstacle on the road without noticing the garbage truck on the roadside. So his automobile collided with the garbage truck violently.

However, the police will investigate any other witnesses to determine the real cause of the fatal accident.
