Bah-Humbug

After I left childhood I stopped caring about Christmas, realising it was just a money-spinner for businesses. I’m not religious anyway and don’t like the phony bonhomie, wishing Merry Christmas to people we normally avoid. When we moved to Buddhist Thailand last year I expected Christmas to be a non event; well, last Christmas in Pattaya was just like being back home. All the supermarkets and stores were playing awful Christmas songs and carols and selling Christmas decorations, trees, cards, toys, even turkeys and puddings. Why does a Buddhist country act as silly as Christian countries over Christmas?

Actually some Thais are Christian, plus many Thais have come to enjoy the practice of giving presents and eating and drinking too much while ignoring the religious aspect, as have many Christians! Also, as New Year is when Thais get together with their families, some use Christmas as an excuse to start the partying earlier. However, the principal reason for promoting seasonal joy is the same as in the west—profit. The multinational stores and their Thai competitors, including small businesses, recognise the opportunity for a financial bonanza. As well as encouraging Thais to give presents and cards, they also see thousands of tourists and expat residents eager to enjoy Christmas: some for the religious meaning, others who enjoy bringing pleasure to their kids, and many who just want to have a good time. Away from the tourist areas far fewer Thais celebrate; for poorer, rural Thais it’s just another day in the life.  You will just have to suffer “Jinger Ben” being played in the stores for a while. Oh, and a Merry Christmas to you sir!
