An employee of the deputy chairman of Sattahip municipal council stole his boss’s car to go out drinking at night. But on the way back, he hit a sign pole and the car veered into a canal. He later told police he had swerved to avoid a bicyclist who cut in front of him.

SATTAHIP – November 9, 2012 [PDN]; at 1 a.m., a report of a car driven into a canal and injuring the driver was received by Pol. Sub. Lt. Ubol Wongkhamchai, investigation police on duty, Sattahip police station, Chonburi province. He rushed to inspect the scene with the rescue officer of Sawangrojjanathammasathan Sattahip foundation.

The incident occurred at km. 174 of Sukhumvit Road on the entrance side to Pattaya, Moo 3 Tambon Sattahip, Amphur Sattahip, Chonburi province.

At the scene, police discovered the car resting in the canal near the road. It was a green Volvo, license number KOR TOR-6707 Chonburi. The front of the car was severely damaged after hitting a concrete signpole marking the kilometers.

The driver suffered bruises to his face. He was identified as Mr. Wichai Hongthong, age 38, address 31 Moo 8 Tambon Photru, Amphur Muang Lopburi, Lopburi province.

During questioning, Mr. Wichai told police that the car belonged to his boss, Mr. Vorathep Nunthamarngkul, deputy chairman of Sattahip municipal council. Mr. Wichai admitted that he had taken his boss’s car without permission to go and drink liquor at the entertainment center in Taotarn, Sattahip.

But while he was returning home and driving at a high speed, a bicyclist changing lanes suddenly turned in front of his car. So Mr. Wichai swerved his vehicle to avoid hitting the bicyclist, but ending up colliding with the concrete signpole, which caused the car to veer into the canal.

Police made notes in their daily report, and charged Mr. Wichai with drunk driving and causing damage to government property with his carelessness.

Horseshit! I processed auto claims when I was in high school. "Swerved to miss dog, ran off road." I saw that line of bullshit more times than I can remember. My favorite one was, "Closed his eyes to see what it was like to drive with his eyes closed, ran off road."
