Residents evacuated following Ammonia leak from Ice Factory in East Pattaya

The emergency services were called into action late on Wednesday Night to respond to reports of a gas leak at an Ice Factory in East Pattaya.

Medics from Banglamung Hospital, Firefighters and other Municipal Officials including the Mayor of Nongprue, Khun Mai, made their way to the Ice Factory, located in Soi Phon Prapha Nimit 8, the road running adjacent to Soi Siam Country Club. They were met by the Brother of the owner, Khun Sitipong aged 40, who confirmed that approximately 2,000 Litres of Ammonia had leaked from tanks at the factory and there was a fear that a lake located next to the factory had become contaminated.

Medics attended to 10 local residents who appeared to be suffering from symptoms of exposure to the gas, including Nose and Eye irritation and vomiting. It was determined that no one required Hospitalization and all 10 residents were treated at the scene.

The Brother of the Ice Factory Owner claimed that a gas leak had occurred earlier in the day but was apparently fixed. When the leak re-occurred later in the night, it was decided to call in the local authorities to assist in this potentially serious incident.

The Mayor downplayed fears of a mass evacuation which may be required but did confirm that some local residents had been moved to temporary accommodation while the leak was being dealt with. He also claimed the incident would be fully cleared in the early hours of Thursday and residents would be able to move back to their houses before daybreak.
