Small-fishchips-at-Simons-300x193.jpgI recently wrote a piece reviewing several fish & chips places. I neglected Simon’s Fish & Chips, in Jomtien, at 413/141 Thappraya Road, slightly after the Hanuman Statue and just outside of Jomtien Complex. (Coming from Pattaya, it’s on the right.) For the last several months, Simon’s has been under new management. The menu offers 21 varieties of ‘fish in batter,’ including traditional (John Dory) fish & chips. (You also can order Icelandic cod or Australian haddock.) Additionally, they have tiger prawns and snapper fish. What is more, there are grilled items, burgers and pizzas, among others. ‘House specials’ included a small order of fish & chips, apple pie a la mode and Tetley’s tea or coffee for 219 baht. With a large order of fish & chips, it’s 269 baht. There’s an ample selection of Thai items for your Thai friend.

I had a small order of the traditional fish and chips (120 baht). If you want mushy peas with that, add 40 baht. The John Dory fish, which was moist and tasty, was prepared in a light, crunchy batter and served with tartar sauce. It was accompanied by an ample portion of freshly prepared ‘chips,’ which were very satisfying. If you prefer American style French fries (as opposed to French style American fries), they can be substituted for the traditional ‘chips.’ You can even put ketchup on your fries instead of the traditional vinegar (if you dare). I found the ‘small’ portion more than adequate. But if you’re really hungry, by all means, go for the large order at 225 baht.

I had apple crumble a la mode for dessert, which was sinful and delicious. My friend had an artfully prepared ice cream Sundae and left Simon’s more than satisfied. There’s basically something for everyone on the menu, including pizzas for less than 200 baht. Simon’s Fish & Chips is open daily from 1 pm to 11 pm. (Phone: 038 267080). There’s indoor and outdoor seating. It’s definitely worth a visit.
