Fugitive Korean Gangster Collared In Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai immigration police arrested a South Korean man wanted for robbery and murder back home. He had fled to Thailand using a forged passport with his younger brother’s name. The Thai immigration police coordinated with the South Korean Embassy to catch the fugitive.

CHIANG RAI – November 4, 2012 [PDN]; The arrest of a South Korean criminal hiding out in Thailand was announced by police at the Chiang Rai immigration police station, Amphur Mae Sai. Making the announcement was Pol. Col. Sa-ngob San-udorn, Deputy Commander Immigration police 5; along with Pol. Col. Sith Sirikungwarnkul, Superintendent of the Immigration police, Chiangrai province.

The suspect was indentified as Mr. Choi Sae Yong, nationality South Korean. He is wanted for robbing and killing people in South Korea. Pol. Col. Sa-ngob revealed that the Thai immigration police coordinated with the South Korea embassy in Thailand to arrest Mr. Choi. The suspect is a member of a South Korean “mafia” type gang, and has murdered many people.

The suspect escaped in the northern part of Thailand, but was arrested by the detective police team of immigration police 5 and the Chiang Rai immigration police. The police arrested Mr. Choi at night while he was sitting in a Korean restaurant in the Night Bazaar at Chiang Rai province.

When the officers arrested him, Mr. Choi Sae Yong showed them a passport that said his name is Mr. Song Daeng Woo. But on closer inspection, police discovered that the passport photo did not match the suspect’s face.

Police later found out that the “Mr. Song Daeng Woo” listed in the passport was in fact the younger brother of the suspect. Mr. Choi had made the altered passport with a forger in China for 5,000 dollars, and entered Thailand on May 20, 2012.

The officers restrained Mr. Choi to prosecute with an accusation of using another person’s passport inappropriately to cause damage to other people, and as a foreigner who travelled into and lived in the Kingdom without permission.

Police then coordinated to South Korea embassy in Thailand to return the suspect back to Korea to be prosecuted further according to the law.
