Centre set up to deal with cold spell in North

LAMPANG, Oct 20— A regional disaster prevention and mitigation office has set up a centre to help cold snap-affected residents in Chiang Mai, Lampang, Lamphun and Mae Hong Son and to brace for approaching cold weather.

Prajon Pratsakul, director of the 10th region disaster prevention and mitigation office in Lampang, on Saturday said that the agency has opened a special operation centre to brace for cold weather which began prevailing over some northern provinces and was likely to affect residents, particularly those living in remote and mountainous areas.

The centre mainly provides assistance for residents in Chiang Mai, Lampang, Lamphun and Mae Hong Son.

In a related development, the Lampang weather bureau reported that the temperatures there were at 21 degrees Celsius this morning.

The cooler weather will likely continue to drop by about 2-3 degrees Celsius from Oct 23-25, said bureau chief Tiwa Phanmaisee.

He explained that the high pressure from China was forecast to cover upper Thailand. Rain was expected to cover the region in the beginning and then the high pressure will bring cooler temperatures.

People are advised to prepare warm clothing to avoid cold weather-related illnesses. (MCOT online news)
