Only open for about a month, Kotta 2, located in Jomtien, at 315/181-182 Thappraya Road, near the Hanuman Statue and next to the Top’s convenience store, is sure to be a hit. The original Kotta is located on Pratamnak Hill. The bistro, with a very large menu, is a steak house, Italian restaurant and also offers an extensive selection of Thai food. There’s outdoor seating, as well as a very attractive air-conditioned dining room.

The menu choices will satisfy those looking to splurge on 2000 baht lobster thermidor or imported steaks in the 750 to 1200 baht range; and those desiring a delicious, gourmet meal for under 500 baht. Many steak items are also offered at more down-to-earth prices. There are about 25 starters and soups to begin the meal and whet the appetite.

My friend tried the clam chowder (New England style; 120 baht) and raved that it was thick, creamy and chock full of potatoes, carrots, celery and, of course, clams. I started with a generous mixed salad, at 95 baht, which consisted of a variety of greens, tomatoes and other vegetables.

We both decided to sample a couple of the homemade pasta creations. I ordered the homemade fettuccini with crab and light cream sauce, which was heavenly. Manop and David, the managers, definitely don’t skimp on ingredients as there was a generous amount of crab with each forkful. Actually, it was so satisfying, I had to skip dessert.

My dining partner tried the homemade ravioli with porcini and mushroom sauce (280 baht), which he said was very tasty. A couple of beers complemented the meal; although there’s an extensive wine list and wine by the glass is offered at 160 baht. Our total bill, with tip, came to exactly 1000 baht (for two), which qualified this excellent meal as a Frugal Gourmand choice.

The menu offers an array of beef, seafood, pork, poultry dishes and a big choice of pizzas. Many mains are in the 200-300 baht range. I highly recommend Kotta 2 (Phone: 038-251233). It’s open daily from noon until late.
