YALA, Oct 18 - A member of a village protection unit was gunned down Thursday in the latest violence in this restive southern province.

Identified as Pipob Homhuan, 49  the victim was shot dead in roadside ambush by presumed insurgents while he drove a motorcycle work in a rubber plantation in Krongpinang district.

Several spent M16 cartridges were found near his body.

Police collected the cartridges for further investigation to determine if they were linked to previous insurgent attacks.

Meanwhile, a bomb exploded in a rubber plantation in Narathiwat's Rangae district this morning.

A dog lost its leg as it stepped onto the bomb which was planted under the soil.

The authorities believe insurgents hid the bomb last night, intending harm to local security workers in retaliation for a search yesterday by paramilitary rangers who cordoned off an area in Tanyong Limo sub-district to search for suspected Runda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) leaders.

Intelligence reports said the RKK were hiding there preparing to attack an unidentified target. (MCOT online news)
