Don Mueang Airport + Thai Air Asia

I've never used this airport or airline and it's substantially cheaper than flying out of Suvarnabhumi on a trip to Phuket. Any opinions? Never heard of anyone using this port..

air asia just moved recently from Suvarnabhumi

it was the main airport before Suvarnabhumi opened on 2006

book away it will be fine :GoldenSmile1:

I have a Problem..... I just can't decide if its a good problem or a bad problem...

Is this serious?

Don Muang Airport was THE Bangkok Airport before Suvarnabhumi opened 6 years or so back.

A couple of the low cost airlines have now moved back there to assist in easing congestion at Suvarnabhumi. I was there just over a week ago. It's an old airport somewhat refurbished. It's fine, does the job. It's obviously in a different location to Suvarnabhumi (about 20-30 minutes further from Pattaya than Suvarnabhumi) so traffic has to be taken into account - especially if you are doing connecting flights between the 2 airports. Afternoon peak hour airport swaps in Bangkok could involve an hour sitting in a taxi ...

Ya, I'm serious. The only thing I knew about Thailand 6 years ago was if someone enquires about the capital you should cover your balls. Makes sense though as a few people - myself included - have reported hovering around waiting on the ok to land. Thanks.

Yep, apologies for the "serious" comment. I guess I just assumed that most people knew about Don Muang from before - my bad.

Cheers

Durring the floods this year it did flood while "Swampy" stayed high and dry. Do you due diligence, and be sure that your travel plans are not durring the wet season, and or flood prone times.

There is a shuttle service 1st floor, to the left of door /area 1 . Haven't used it just seen the sign

I fly Thai Air Asia 10x/year and they do a good job with newish planes, all Airbus A320, they're a low cost airlines, thus you pay for everything, be warned for luggage: buy online what you need: 15,20,25, 30,40kgs, anything over your weigth will cause you problems at check in, buying online they will try to charge you for expensive "Hot seat" and travel insurance etc.

I came tru DM last week on Nok Air, and ho, this airport looks 10 years older that 10 years ago, what y'a expect???

Why they reopened DM?

Simple mathematics without consideration for travellers.

The new 6 years ago opened airport was designed for a capacity of 45 million passengers, there were plans to expand.

The old DM airport has been constantly renovated expanded to a capacity of 35 million.

Thus reopening DM allows for 45+35 = 80 million passenger without building a new terminal or third Runway at the new airport.

Brilliant minds at work :Think1:

That international travellers with domestic connections need to travel between airports 50kms apart without decent railway connection is not of their concern. (you will need two extra hours planned between international/domestic flights)

Air Asia has instaured a free bus schedule every 30 minutes between both airports, report say the trip takes 35 minutes all highway, no stops, but beware traffic can come to a stop on the highway.

I had a free limo thrown in with my business class ticket to Europe and enjoyed the Benz ride :hello09:

It's all good, I clearly didn't do any extensive research before posting. Was just a bit curious with the price differenece.

Hey, thanks for all the info, do you know if costs for 2 bags and the extra taxi time exceed or come near $100 (ie not worth it)?

Also, not sure what you mean here "be warned for luggage: buy online what you need: 15,20,25, 30,40kgs, anything over your weigth will cause you problems at check in"

On Air Asia you buy the amount of luggage allowance you want.

The lowest quoted price will normally have zero luggage allowance (other than carry on). So you pay extra for the luggage allowance you need. But if you buy 10kg and you turn up with, say, 12 then they will likely make you pay extra at the time of check in and the process can be a pain in the arse...

As for taxi fares. To/from BKK the fare will be roughly same for both airports. I understand to/from Pattaya they are charging 100 to 200 baht more - so neither here nor there...

I bougt a Bangkok-Udon Thani for late this month, will bring 40kgs, thus added bags for 40kgs, total was around 2250 baht, including 65 for "ordinary" seat selection and 80 processing fee for paying with a credit card, the 40kg luggage was 1130, all +VAT.

Thai airways asks around 2200 but I might get problems with 40kgs and business costs 4200, thus I still save around 2k.

If I would check in 41kgs I will be hit with a luggage excess charge, 80B/kilo.

Thus if arriving Swampy with 20kgs I would take Thai if timing is favourable (not having to wait 6h for a flight to Udon) and Air Asia would cost me around 1500. It's a hassle to commute to the other airport, even with a free bus thrown in.

I will spend a night in Bangkok (pick up a bird in Soi Cowboy or a freelancer around soi 7) thus taxying to the other airport is not a concern this time.

I just flew Air Asia into Don Mueang BKK from Singapore last week. I was 2nd in line at immigration and was out the door in a taxi with my suitcase in record time. I hate Suvarnabhumi where it usually takes 40 minutes to get through immigration.

I will be flying Air Asia out of Don Mueang to Macau in a few weeks. It should be great compared to Suvarnabhumi. Yeah the airport is only slightly refurbished and feels a little like a ghost airport, I don’t care about the cosmetics. It is worthwhile to me to avoid the long lines

By the way, I am having a gas in Bangkok. Too many girls, too many choices: it is a bountiful feast. The weather is sunny, cloudy and rainy. I’ll be stopping by Pattaya later in the month. Singapore was a big surprise. Great women – especially the Chinese girls in Geylang.

Just went through DM yesterday after a Chiang Mai trip. The place looks a lot better than the las time I was there but still run down, its old! Flew with Nok, have been with those guys before and really rate them. Cheap, polite, punctual and no luggage issues. Only flew with hand luggage but had bursting bags on return plus additional bags of stuff (Thai GF wanted loads of "Nothuern" food) pluss we went to Baan Tawai, WOW is all I can say about that. Anyway, not a problem about excess hand luggage, not a word so relax.

Beware, caught taxi to V Monument tfor bus return as there seems no direct bussing at present which I hope will change pretty soon, took an hour and a half, and that was with the toll road. It was morning but please take into account longer time than you'd expect.

I always liked using this airport..better than the new one..had a good feel about it, but couldn't cope with the amount of traffic they used to get. The tollway drive in to the city was good too. Old days before the tollway was built it used to take 4 or 5 hours for a 20 minute drive now.

What will you be ordering from the breakfast menu?

I'm flying into DM weekly, usually use Nok Air, which includes baggage as part of their service.

Fly Air Asia last week as usual flight was booked out.

Their a good airline, book the food, I seriously believe one of the benefits of cheap airlines is they do offer "Real or Better" food than regular commercial flights.

Love Air Asia old Chicken Focaccia, currently I like the Malaysian style dishes you can buy cheap.

At DM for good cheap food eat up stairs in the food area after you check in before you enter the security area.

They have a great Koa Soi Gai there.

Starbucks has opened also, and a 7/11

Air Asia has been voted the Worlds Best Low Cost Airlines 4 years running according to there website.

The Airline is based in Malaysia, but because of Thailands friendly air travel regulations is able to pick up passengers within Thailand aswell as fly locally and internationally out of Thai airports.

Air Asia offers some of the cheapest fares to major Asian destinations, KL is there HUB so plan accordingly if you plan to venture to destinations where BKK is not used as the hub such as heading to the Philippines. If you plan to make a quick trip to the Phils Air Asia out of KL is the cheapest way to go.

Cheers
