Floating homes applied to fight against flood

PHITSANULOK, Oct 10 – The governor of Phitsanulok said he is satisfied with the floating homes the province has developed for use in flooding situations, and said he will seek additional budget to build more such structures for low-income flood victims in repeatedly flooded areas.

While inspecting Bang Rakam district and issuing relief supplies to 50 households still flooded one metre deep, Governor Preecha Ruangchan said the innovative housing was useful to all concerned.

The governor said that the five floating homes which have been built in the district, as a joint public and private sector activity, help alleviate the burden of poor flood victims by providing homes with water, electricity and restrooms without the need to move to higher ground when floods arrive.

Twenty-one tanks support the house as it floats at water level, while four pillars control the house which is 7 metres tall.

The governor said flood this year is not as severe as last year. The local irrigation office is draining water from low-lying areas in Bang Rakam district and parts of the provincial seat into canals.

If there is no more rain, farmers are expected to start their rice planting by the end of the month. (MCOT online news)
