NARATHIWAT, Oct 9 - Two volunteer paramilitary rangers were shot dead in Narathiwat on Tuesday, bringing the death toll of insurgent attacks in the restive South to five on this single day.

The latest incident occurred on a road in Rangae district when two paramilitary rangers, identified as Chanakorn Kanchong, 26, and Piyarat Rompreuk, 29, were gunned down.

Police found ten spent cartridges of AK-47 near the bodies. The assailants also took away the victims’ motorcycle and a .38 pistol.

Initial investigation found the rangers were assigned to take care of villagers' plantations.

They were riding their motorcycle back from buying food to the farm and were followed by a pick-up truck which witnesses considered suspicious.

A man in the back of the truck was seen firing at the two victims.

Earlier, a public health volunteer was shot in the head while she and her husband drove a motorcycle to tap rubber. The victim died while being taken to hospital. Her husband was not wounded.

In Pattani, two gunmen in a rubber plantation ambushed a couple coming by motorcycle to tap rubber. Both victims died instantly at the scene. (MCOT online news)
