Sattahip Boats Take Refuge After Scary Storm Warning

Hundreds of fishing and commercial boats were docked along the Sattahip coast due to the approaching tropical depression Gaemi. But the much-hyped storm weakened as it moved through Thailand, dumping moderate rain. Ocean conditions were still stormy due to lingering monsoons.

SATTAHIP – October 8, 2012 [PDN]; There were hundreds of fishing boats of small, medium and large sizes, as well as merchandise boats that had docked in sheltered coves and harbors to hide from anticipated stormy sea waves and high wind. Many watercraft were docked at Samaesarn Bay in front of U-Taphao airport bay, or hid behind the Luangphor Dam mountain.

In area of Amphur Sattahip, Chonburi province, there were 4 ports for fishing boats to take shelter, which included the Pratheung bridge at Sattahip market; the Bang Saray market port; and the Baan Amphur port. The biggest port was at the Chong Samaesarn bridge, which has 11 bridges.

The ships had sought shelter after an announcement by the Meteorological Department that the Gaemi storm that will move into Thailand from Cambodia on October 6-8. They warned that the path of the storm would cause heavy raining and winds in the affected areas.

In the upper Thai bay, the storm would cause waves 2-3 meters high, and fishermen should beware of danger when navigating and small boats should avoid traveling in the Andaman sea. The Sattahip sheriff had also warned the fishermen and the big fishing boats at Tambon Samaesarn, Tambon Bang Sarey, Tambon Na Jomtien and Tambon Sattahip to bring in their boats to protect from the storm.
