just wondering if any one knows if they have larger size ssd and if so how much are they?

just looking on ebay uk and they are around the 140-150£ range are they cheaper in Thailand at the moment?

I have seen 256GB SSD's in tukcom.

Think it was about 7500 baht (I think)

There are a few shops on the third floor (computer hardware) that sell them - the best one is the one with the price board outside - stops all the haggling crap.

You'll probably pay an import tax and will have to find someone who will ship to Thailand.. just some thoughts.

Cheers,

I really haven't looked as I get mine overseas from newegg. 250gb is more than enough because you should use an SSD for your OS and you really shouldn't put too much isht on that drive. I have 3tb external drives (1 caddy with 2x 3tb drives) for data and movies, since my lapity topity box can only take 1 2.5" drive. I use friends for these things like bringing it when they visit me or in my holiday package. you can use a remailer as well.

I have had OCZ in the past and still do. I have had 6 fail all due to issues with Sleep or hybernate mode with windows 7. OCZ isn't good with that. Buy Intel if you can afford it. faster/better etc. I still buy ocz, I just don't use sleep mode anymore. I have found that I have more issues over time with an SSD than spinning disk so make sure to back up anything you care to keep. data restoration on an SSD can be much spendier depending on the failure.

I just fitted a Samsung 830 series notebook upgrade kit. Which is said to be reliable and it is very fast. The USB adapter and software comes in handy to perform the migration. Don't buy too cheap. You'll regret it soon.

Just remember all SSD are not alike.... look at the read & write speeds and see some large differences!!!

Read on arstechnica a while back that the problems with sleep/hibernate aren't isolated to the OCZ brand, but any SSD using the sandforce controller. That means OCZ, Corsair and a few others are all in the same boat. The same article mentioned that the companies released updated firmware to fix the problem. I guess hibernate is more likely to cause the issue than sleep mode, but either way, they did acknowledge an issue. Whatever SSD you get, make sure TRIM is enabled if using Windows 7. Not always default on installation.

I've got an OCZ Vertex 4 128GB SSD in my PC. Very pleased with it, it's scoring 7.9 in the windows experience index.

Agreed. but OCZ maybe due to the sheer popularity and units sold has taken the brunt of the negativity. I am currenty running 2 OCZ 128gb (Vertex 2 and Agility 3) and I think a Vertex 4 256. I use multiple 3tb drives for data. I'd die if I had to go back to spinning disk for the OS. I also found that their support people are fricken AWESOME btw. no hassle warranty return for hybernate issues.

I found trim was always enabled if installing Win7 (Ifrom scratch) with the SSD in it. I don't "tranfer OS;s from drive to drive. I just reinstall.

I like OCZ stuff. They usually have the best performance to price ratio.

As for TRIM in Windows 7, I probably should have said that it isn't always default "on" when buying certain pre-made systems. I've heard some older Windows 7 Dells ship without TRIM being on by default. Any time an OEM has a chance to mess around with the OS settings, it is typically bad news. I also prefer to build/install myself.

I have had 3 fails on OCZ - 2x vertex 2 and one vertex 4 - after that I gave up on Vertex

I have had an Intel now for 18 months - not one issue at all - even had sleep / hibernate / power outages (i live thailand) - the power outage was what killed the vertex 4. With the intel no issues whatsoever.

I've come to the conclusion it's pretty much essential to have a UPS here.

Havn't got a clue what your talking about but my computers never crashed.

Is an ssd along the same lines as a flash drive?

Posted

getting off topic.... yes you have to have a UPS here. you will eventually start frying parts especially if you use crappy 200b power strips. I went overboard but I can run my monitor, speakers (yep), computer, hub, and router for about an hour.

Both USB sticks and SSD drives use FLASH memory. Generally, the term flash drive refers to a USB drive using low grade parts (the flash RAM chips aka NAND chips themselves and the memory controller) and SSD refers to high quality parts with a SATA type interface.

Excluding the quality of parts and the interface, they are basically the same type of technology. One you use to store porn on but the other is what you use to store porn on ;) LOL

USB sticks can be used to run your OS but a good quality SSD drive would potentially last longer and be significantly faster. While an SSD drive (with the standard form factor of a 2.5" laptop drive is less portable especially with and internal SATA adapter instead of USB.

I have actually done the upgrade now , ended up getting the adata 256gb sp900 premier pro £114.99p + free postage from a uk seller, all is good so far, i did have a couple of teething problems with windows 7 not seeing the ssd in an external casing , this was fixed by formating the new drive,

it actually came with a code for accronis true image for the data migration,

i re-installed the laptop to factory setting, then deleted all the acer bloat ware before i done the migration,

very easy to do , made the few tweaks necessary made sure trim was enabled and its been running fine for 2 weeks now, without issue,

definitely an  upgrade i should have done along time ago, laptop is lightening fast compared to what it was like on hdd,

very happy with the results .......

Do you really need the speed ?.

If so then go for it.

I got a desk top with one and it has failed.

I now use the 3tb hard drive and it works fine.

If you don't need one IMO give it a miss.
