Getting from Patts to Ko Tao ?

Recommended Posts

After my couple nights in Patts I'll be heading to Ko Tao for some diving...How the heck do I get there?

Thanks in advance.

There is a boat from Bangkok that goes to Samui, phanang and then koh Tao. I do not remember the name. Look into the cheapest way to get to koh Samui and then Koh tao from there. But if you find this boat your set.

Take a bus or train to Chumphon and then the ferry to koh Tao. Quicker than goig to Surat Thani. Best to buy a night train ferry package that includes transfer from the train statio to the ferry.

You should be able to buy the package from most travel agents

I agree this is the best way. Just to add though you can buy the package ( train / ferry ) at the train station.

Been twice from bangkok

Once by train and once by small plane (solar air ) both times thought I was going to die.

You can still fly from Bangkok to chumphon with Solar Air.

They bus you to the ferry all up its 2900 baht to Tao. Solar Air is owned by ferry company I'm told.

When I undertook the journey the plane was delayed by bad weather but after 3 hours and one false start we left. The weather around Don Mueang was still bad and it was a bit hairy. When the air conditioner started some passengers thought the plane was filling with smoke.

We arrived at Chumphon and my TG was much relieved but already dreading the return flight as was I to be truthful. The mini bus to the ferry was even worse, that was truly scary. The ferry was waiting on the dozen or so plane passengers before it could leave so naturally the driver was driving "like he'd stole it" .

The day before we were to leave Koh Tao I got a text saying due to technical reasons the plane had been cancelled and please ring this number. Called them and they offered a bus journey back to bkk and I wasnt happy and after few calls they offered to fly us back from Surat thani with air Asia. So when the ferry landed a mini bus was waiting for the journey to Surat thani but of course there was only just enough time to make that flight if the driver drove like a maniac which he was up for. Had to pay for additional luggage at air Asia cos they booked us on with no luggage

Asia did let us off some though, but we did get extra legroom. Flight was delayed but airport is also by the airforce and they were practicing takeoffs & landings so that was interesting.

I not a nervous flyer normally but small planes + bad weather aren't for me.

You can also fly BKK to Koh Samui and get on the ferry there. Short flight and about a 2 hour boat ride.

Koh Tao is beautiful.

Just to clarify your options.

Option 1; Most expensive but quickest, Fly BKK to Samui then lomprayah ferry to Ko Tao via Ko Phang Ngan.

Option 2; Most fun. Night train to Chumphon then aforesaid ferry directly to ko Tao. (The 10.50pm train arrives at 5.42 haha am which gives loads of time for the first ferry at 7.00am) Theres taxis that take you to the ferry port but be wary of extortionate prices. if they give you a silly price just smile, say no thanks & walk to the next taxi.

Option 3; Bus to Chumphon then ferry. Cheapest but crappiest. If you decide to go by bus the most comfortable option is to go to the western bus station in Bkk and buy a ticket on a government bus. Travel agents will put you on the backpacker special which is extremely cheap & nasty. (well it was the last time i was on it)

You can buy an all in ticket from Bkk but option 3 is more comfortable.

Enjoy..

LOS. Gotta Love It.

I made this trip earlier this year. I took the public bus from Pattaya to Bangkoks southern bus terminal and then jumped on a bus to Hua Hin. Overnighted in Hua Hin, bought a joint bus/catermeran ticket B1000from a travel agent. Hua Hin to Koa Tao takes about 5 hours.

I took a boat from Ko Tao to Samui, and then flew BKK Airways to U-Tapao then took the bus straight to Pattaya.

The easiest way (not the cheapest) is to take a plane from U-Tapao Airport, which is 20 mn from Pattaya, to Ko-Samui and a speed boat from Samui to Ko-Tao

Yes this is the best way for sure.
