Patent application for green curry chicken to be followed up: Deputy Commerce Minister

BANGKOK, Sept 7 – Thailand’s commerce ministry has ordered the Intellectual Property as well as the International Trade Promotion Departments to follow up on patent applications for Thailand's green curry chicken abroad for fear of foreigners acquiring the rights.

Deputy Commerce Minister Poom Sarapol said the move came after rumours that American chefs will apply for patents for the chicken green curry recipe as their own invention, which may have a negative impact on the ownership of the original Thai food patent rights.

However, Mr Poom said if it is a newly-made recipe, then the patent application can be done both in Thailand and abroad, and that might not affect Thailand’s original green curry recipe.

On the same day, the Deputy Commerce Minister presided over a Bangkok ceremony to destroy pirated goods, regarding cases which had been given their last verdict by the court.

Over 5 million counterfeit items had previously been destroyed.

The goods demolition today includes more than 1.1 million items amounting to 90 tonnes, valued at around Bt1.8 billion, including clothes, handbags and luggage, watches, shoes, auto parts, tablet computers, and personal notebooks. (MCOT online news)
