Small Boy Killed By Falling Fence Door

A 3-year-old boy died from his injuries after a heavy iron fence door fell on him. He was opening the door in front of his house in Tambon after a family shopping trip. His shocked parents lifted the fence off and summoned help, but the boy died before rescue officers arrived.

PATTAYA – September 1, 2012 [PDN]; at 11:30 a.m., a fatal accident involving a child was reported to Pol. Capt. Jeerasak Aebphaeng, investigation officer, Banglamung police station, Nong Preu sub branch, Chonburi province.

The child had been crushed by an iron fence door at house number 93/43 Daraphan 3 village Soi Khaotalo 8 Moo 11 Tambon Nong Preu, Amphur Banglamung.

A police team rushed to the scene with the rescue officer from the Sawangboribulthammasathan Pattaya foundation.

In front of a 1-story townhouse, police found the body of the 3-year-old boy, Jonathan John Athip Chapman or JJ, who isThai-British. He was lying on the ground, bleeding heavily from a broken skull. Jonathan was a pre-kindergarten student at Tantrarak school,

Hugging his body and crying uncontrollably were his parents, Mr. Ewan Phillip Chapman, age 42, nationality British, and Mrs. Duangthip Petchneamage, age 31.

Lying on the ground nearby was the iron sliding-door fence that had killed the boy. It was approximately 3 meters high and almost 2 meters wide. Neighbors had helped move the heavy fence to the side of the house immediately after the accident.

During questioning, Mrs. Duangthip kept crying as she talked to police. She said that she and Mr. Ewan got married and lived together for many years, and had one child, Jonathan. The couple owns a company in England, and frequently travel between Thailand and England.

Before the fatal accident, the family was returning in their car from a shopping trip. As they reached their house, their son JJ got out of the car to open the fence door of the house by himself. But suddenly the door fell on him and crushed his body. Mrs. Duangthip and her husband helped lift up the fence door with a neighbor who rushed to help. Rescue officers were called, but when they arrived JJ had already died.

Previously Mrs. Duangthip would not allow her son to open and close the fence door to the house. But this time he refused to follow her rule and asked to open the door himself. Mrs. Duangthip reluctantly decided it was OK if he was careful. But she never dreamed she would lose her son forever.

She asked that parents everywhere use their tragedy as an example of always being watchful for the safety of your children.

After investigating, the police took photographs and made daily notes for evidence. They noted that the top of the iron door had no catch or lock to secure the door when it was slid all the way open. As a result, the door fell on JJ and killed him because it was so heavy.

I was googling to find a story about a similar tragedy here in the UK recently....bloody hell there are loads of incidences of exactly the same accident from all around the world....bloody awful.

Obviously a very sad and tragic accident. I am not sure why the "press" here in Thailand feels compelled to show the parents grieving over their son's body. Really uncalled for in my opinion. If you have a small child give them a hug and a kiss as life is very fragile, especially here in Thailand. I know I did after reading this story.

I felt sorry and very sad when i read this, Will be tough on Parents for long long time. May need some conselling help but I doubt it is available in Thailand. Maybe her belief , Buddhist monk will help her to overcome the tragedy.... RIP to the boy.
