Nearly 40 fire trucks battled a raging fire in the Super department store in Naratthiwat that resulted from an exploding bomb planted by terrorists. No immediate casualties were reported, although nearby residents were evacuated.

NARATHIWAT – September 1, 2012 [PDN]; Southern terrorists are suspected in the latest bombing that occurred inside the Super department store on Jamroonnara road. It is the biggest and well-known department store in Narathiwat municipality in south Thailand.

The fire started at the back of the store after the bomb exploded. The flames spread quickly to engulf the building, which was connected to other people’s houses. Residents evacuated frantically amid the chaos, while grabbing necessary belongings.

The sheriff of Muang Narathiwat, Mr. Thalerngsak Yorksiri, took command at the scene. He requested supporting fire trucks and firefighters from Yee Ngor and Tark Bai.

Altogether nearly 40 trucks battled the fire, dispersing to different locations. However, the fire continued to blaze, due to many flammable objects in the building.

Authorities assumed the bombing is the action of a terrorist group. The terrorists had apparently disguised themselves among shoppers to lay the bombs inside the store, hidden behind boxes the store kept in stock.

The authorities will conduct an investigation after the fire has been completely extinguished.
