New restrictions for people travelling to Australia and bringing cigarettes

Recommended Posts

All,

Australian government has implemented a new rule that has cut down the amount of cigarettes you can bring to Australia.

Earlier you could bring 250 cigarettes, but this has been reduced to 50 now. You will need to pay tax on anything more than that.

This could also cause delay in you getting out of customs as they will check everybody thoroughly. This could mean you may need to declare everything to avoid any surprises.

Cheers

Are we that hard up we need the extra duty on 200 smokes !?!?!?!

It's not the duty, it's the anti-smoking thing. Like plain packaging.

Nothing to do with it, those that love to tell others how to live their lives have a bug up their arse about smoking. New legislation in Canberra, no smoking in any public place eg parks, sidewalks etc, proposed legislation in Tasmania making it illegal to sell smokes to people born after 2000.

They cloak it in health concerns but that's a lie because smokers & the obese are cheaper because they die sooner.

Next they come for alcohol, then fatty foods then sweets then...

I don't smoke or drink so it has no impact on me but banning smoking is deeply indicative of a society I no longer want to be part of, one that seeks to control it's citizens, I certainly don't vote for the fuktards in Government making this shit up but plenty of Aussies are.

It will earn the government 115 million in its first year and 175 million per year by the 4th year. Question is, where are they spending it? Perhaps some of it can go into reducing Customs lines at the airport that this will cause. Bloody governments eh.

Yep, it's another sneaky Tax grab. It means that instead of having a couple of weeks smoking Duty Free, all tourists and returning Aussies have to buy those smokes locally and pay tax for the privilege.

However, whilst the anti-smoking brigade sits back smiling, you might want to bear in mind that eyes have already turned to the social impact of drinking alcohol.

I'm not entirely sure how happy everyone's going to be when the drinkers get to join the smokers in the joys of excessive taxation, plain packaging and no Duty Free allowances. And yes, they're already looking at these measures, it was reported quietly in the news weeks ago. The Cancer Council is very happy about what's been done to the smokers, and would now like the same done to the drinkers.

As the Tax on tobacco in Australia is 62.5% of the final purchase price, drinkers could expect to see the price of their tipple nearly doubling in the years to come.

Obviously this is all good, as we shall all be very healthy and live much longer - except the Gov't has also cut Aged Care funding and stopped folks putting away as much money as they want into their Super' accounts.

Given that funding is taking a hit due to the slowing of the resources boom and the falls in commodity prices, I wonder what lovely new taxes or 'emergency levies' we'll be seeing over the next few years.......

Cheers!! :Drunk_Party:

Don't worry, mate, when the Liberals are back in power they will get back to encouraging the poor to drink and smoke themselves to death again -while working of course on Gina's new super-minimum wage - and the super rich can pour as many tax free bucks into their super accounts as they want (while still getting medicine at 1/6th of the price of a worker on the minimum wage) and send their kids to government funded private schools. The poor can subsidise the private health cover of the rich too while they're at it and mining billionaires will be relieved of the mining tax on the super profits for selling the resources owned by you and me.

What a great country it will be again under Tony and Joe and Bananaby!

All they'll need to top it off is for the Yanks to start another war for us to join in on! Maybe we'll get that if Tony's ideological ally Mitt wins the US election.

When does the new limit come in?

Already came into effect as of yesterday.

Incorrect. Just "goods that may be restricted"....porn isn't illegal...yet ;-p

This is referring to child porn and other nasty and sick shit. (as if someone is going to declare that).

I ticked it once out of curiosity and told them it was just a few regular porn dvd's. That was the end of it.

Page 11.

Page 15 for tobacco and alcohol.

Quite an interesting doc actually. You don't need to declare serious meds so long as you have a prescription; Valium, Xanax, etc.

Also talks about steroids. And counterfeit goods which we all have...dvd's, watches, etc but guess they are talking about serious amounts for those that have a market stall somewhere.

Anyway, back to the topic, ciggs,...seems harsh....just glad I don't smoke.

I seem to remember reading that the porn ban was for "offensive" porn, which could mean anything that offends people ( muslims for example, who are often offended by everything).

As I travel a lot thru customs, I dont take anything across borders (porn) and stay under the duty free allowances. Once you get on the "watch list" they stop you everytime. I get waived thru every time now, need it to stay that way too.

I seem to remember reading that the porn ban was for "offensive" porn,.
It was originally any porn, that meant everything, including a naked pic of your wife or gf on your phone. They eventually changed it. As mentioned though anyone carrying child porn is not going to tick the box anyway, it just means if they do catch you, it gives them another offence to charge you with. Anything that is illegal in Aus. that would include golden showers, fisting, beastiality, child porn. Of course the definition of child porn in Aus. is pretty extensive, eg a cartoon of Bart & Lisa fucking (simpsons) is. So if a mate sends you a cartoon of Peter fucking Meg (family guy) as a joke, you will be convicted as a sex offender if discovered. As some guy from here was saying a mate was done because he was sent a pic of a chick fucking a horse by some mate of his as a joke and they found it on his phone.

I don't like the way Aus. is going with all this, my fellow Aussies seem happy with it 'cause they keep voting the same fuktards back into office, be they ALP or LNP. It' s getting worse not better, so I left.

Can't agree more about Aus - i have to return a few times a year for personal and business reasons - but I live in Patts. The Aus i knew has gone, it's a Big Brother state now, with huge restrictions and is now horrendeously expensive.

RIP Aus

I like the country but can only handle the people that are changing it in small doses, we go back in December for a couple months & I think i will really struggle. Will spend a month in Patts beforehand, phsycing myself up. Breathe deep 555

Looking at your Username, I gave up on big road bikes a decade ago, last one was an Aprillia RSV Mille, changed to offroad, no cops :)

The Gixxer1000 is back in Aus, too bloody dangerous around Patts to ride that sort of bike. Looking for a suitable replacement...maybe the Kwaka 600...
