Guinness shoots Thailand to fame with mass massage listing

BANGKOK, AUG 30 - Thailand is the massage capital of the world. That’s the verdict. Guinness World Records officially announced Thailand as the country with “the most people massaged at the same time.”

A beaming Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra represented Thailand in receiving the award from Robert Molloy, Guinness World Records adjudicator, on Thursday.

A total of 641 Thai masseuses simultaneously massaged 641 people in 12 minutes, crushing Australia’s 2010 record of 263 mass massages at the same time in five minutes.

The new record was announced in the Thailand Medical Expo 2012 in Bangkok, which was kicked off Thursday and runs through Sunday.

Trained masseuses officially certified by the Public Health Ministry are giving service to fair-goers while public and private hospitals set up booths on health and medical services using conventional and traditional medicine.

An assessment of Thailand’s medical service in 2012 found 2.5 million foreigners receiving medical treatments in Thailand with the highest number from Japan, followed by the US, Middle Eastern countries and Australia.

The medical service has generated revenues of Bt121.6 billion for Thailand. (MCOT online news)
