My vaccinations for UK to Pattaya

Hi all,

I had done a little research about what I might need to get and when I needed to get them before I go to Pattaya, some of the information was easy to find on here and some I just couldn't find at all! So this is why I thought I would just write up what I had done today and what I have planned for the future in respect of jabs.

I must say that you should always ask your doctor about what jabs you need! don't take my case as a standard!

I was told that I need to get hep-a, hep-b, mmr, tetanus and typhoid before my trip, and also told that I should get a rabies one too, but I was also told that as long as I sort medical attention as soon as(if it happened) I got bitten, then they would give me that shot and my travel insurance would pay for it. Oh, and I was also told about TB, but I had had this done whilst I was at school.

The total cost for these holiday jabs was nothing! I couldn't believe it was all on the NHS! The lovely nurse did tell me that she should really charge me for the hep-a and hep-b shots, but(not really sure how this works??) if she put them both together, then they are free!

I was advised that due to the location(Pattaya) being in the low risk area, that I would not need to take any antimalarials, whch was a great relief as they do carry a few common side effects.

I Have today had my first course of the hep-a/b and the MMR jabs, I have to go back in two weeks for the Tetanus and Typhoid, and then in a further two weeks for the second round of Hep-a/b(I have the third round after six months) and this(the second round of Hep jabs) will protect me against them for my trip!

I hope that this might help a few who seek this information!

Oooppsss...

Nearly forgot to say that you need atleast a month to get these done before your trip! Today it is 30/8/2012 and I go on my travels on 10/10/2012

alternatively DONT BOTHER :)

never had any in my life and have never had any problems.

Those jabs are expensive in the US. I don't feel that they are necessary unless your going to the boonies. One thing to watch out for are the oysters or any other raw seafood. I ate some in koh samed and was curled up in a ball shivering for nearly two days.

Seeing as they are free, and also my trend for bad health of late, I think I would of been an idiot not to of got them!

I only posted this as I couldn't find much on the site about the whole thing, so thought this would help some English BMs.

IMO you would have to be nuts not to get them if you are a brit as they're free! you only have to get unlucky once and it could mess your life up forever!

I too Bill have had all the shots that you are intending to have and feel it is better to be safe than Sorry. :Think1:

The full Hepatitis B series is more than a month for full immunity so start the series (of three) before a month. The schedule is 0-1-6 months.

If Typhoid is free go for it but I doubt there has been a case in metro areas of Thailand for a very long time. Rabies same idea. Even though there are feral dogs that doesn't mean rabies is common. In the boonies, going native, spelunking, go for both.

The MMR, Tetanus, and so on, I hope people have had these as routine in their lives and don't get immunized for a trip for the first time.

Keep polio up to date as well.

Bill if you feel safer with them it's ok .

But 5 or 6 shots before going to Pattaya seems total overkill to me . Even if they are free i think

the shots do more harm than good .

I'm convinced that most of these injections are purely to sponsor the (maffia) medical industry .

They make people scared with stories about terrible diseasus you can catch in certain countries

in the world so their business keeps on going .

But that's one of the problems with the Western world . They're are being taken care of from birth

till death and are hardly able to think for theirselves anymore .

After living in Asia for years you get a whole different view on the Western world .

Some of the jabs are more useful than some for the occasional tourist, though the one that I advise for everyone is rabies - you gotta get the rabies jab. In SE Asia there are loads of dogs. cats, monkeys, and a high rabies rate, so for me that's a no-brainer.

The others, Hep A & Hep B, the flus, polio/tetanus/diphtheria, MMR, typhoid, TB & possibly Japanese Encephalitis are dependent on your previous vaccination, health state and duration of travel. I live and work in SE Asia so I've got them all as par the course.

FYI, I'm a doctor with a tropical disease sub-speciality, so kinda know a bit about the field! For me, I’d much rather prescribe a suite of prophylaxis vaccinations than a treatment regime for a patient.

Just booked mine today too. Getting Hep-B and A only though, had tetanus in school about 8 years ago and not to concerned about the others.

Had my Hep-B shots a while ago for work. Just had my Hep-A and Typhoid a couple of days ago. Spoke to my doctor about the risks.

He said Hep-A and B and Typhoid are through asia but where I'm going the risks aren't that high, unless I'm having sex without a condom (refering to hepB)

HepA and typhoid you get from eating contaminated food, or poo from a chicks arse (in the case of HepA) if you are that way inclined.

He said it would not hurt to get the shots though. He said that he did have a case of a person coming back from Bali with Typhoid

Told me that Typhoid makes you shit blood!!

While the chances are low of getting any of these I think it doesn't hurt to get the shots for peace of mind.

oh and BigBill don't forget the drinks at Martinell!!!!

Nice to hear from a man that knows!

I just got all I needed as I have not been a well man of late and my system is not very strong!

I'm sure that there is a wealth of jabs that are given without good reason really! but I just got mine as of the above reason! it just seems like since all of my illness, I am never very well!

Hi mate,

Don't worry! I have it marked in my diary! I will try and get all of the other BMs that I meet to attend too!

I'm sure it'll be a great night for us all!

If your a backpacker and going off the beaten track then you should have all the recommended Jabs..

As far as Pattaya is concerned, unfortunately there are no vaccinations against HIV, Syphillis, Gonnoreah and general Nob rot!

OH MY GOD!! can you get nob rot?? I dont think I can afford to catch that! lol

Most are for the higher risk areas really! But I think if they are free then why not cover yourself? it's only a little bit of time it's cost you!

Thankyou Doctor.I have had all my shots, hep A B etc about 5 years ago BUT never thought about the Rabies shot.

here are some facts i didnt know about rabies

  • The disease occurs in all continents except Australia and Antarctica
  • Over 50,000 deaths occur annually, world wide, half of this in India alone
  • Travellers need to be aware that a bite, lick or scratch from an infected animal may be fatal
  • There are no known survivors of rabies once clinical symptoms are present
  • The animal does not have to appear ill to have rabies
  • Vaccination against rabies is mandatory following any bite from a mammal

Good info Bill , i've always had the jabs and kept tem up to date , some people may say they don't bother and that's up to them , but not really sound advise to pass onto others

If it floats, flies or fucks It's probably cheaper to rent ...

I just tried to put it all in one post really. I could not find on here about the cost of them either? so thought that a few more people might find this of interest!

I do agree that it is unwise advice to tell someone that they shouldn't get them, but it's all down to personal choice really!

Thanks for the post though mate!
