If I bring my iPhone to thailand can I send and receive texts with data roaming switched off ? what about calls? Also since Im not telling anyone I'm going to Thailand I was wondering if a person back home can tell I'm in a foreign country if I send them a text or call them from Thailand or if they try texting or calling me from home can they tell I'm abroad

If you had a thai sim then yes they will know your overseas,otherwise no.

Take the mini SIM out at the airport when you leave, if it is locked, get it unlocked in Thailand, grab a suitable SIM & data/voice plan when u get here. Use kik messenger or what's app, or skype for friends at home.

 

Put your home sim back in when you land at your home airport. Unlocking is a once only affair.

This is what you do Brother, before you leave to come to Thailand go to WWW.whatsapp.com* and download their free software to your I-phone. When once you get here buy a sims card and load 90 baht.

With the software, you will be able to send and receive emails and text from your family at locale Thailand rates.

now if you want to get down to it, turn off the radio signal when you are in a free Wifi area and you can still send and receive text messages from family and friends.

I use Google voice for texting when I'm in USA and when in LOS. There is no way they know where I am when texting.

your phone will still work with data roaming switched off, it's advisable to do this anyway to prevent high charges. if you use facebook on your iphone turn off location services or your posts will give away where your to

whatsapp requires the senders and receivers back home to have the program on the phone as well. that's what I thought anyway.

 

FYI the ring someone back home is calling you overseas sounds different than when you're at home. I'm sure it may not be true for every country and every carrier, just something to think about if you're hoping to pretend you haven't left the country altogether.

Possible, yes, but it's a hack, and you will end up with an unreliable product. Better to trade in your iPhone 4 for an iPhone 4S, factory unlocked, and pay the minor difference in price. You can get factory unlocked iPhone 4S at MBK (Bangkok) for 18,500 baht for the 32GB version. Far better solution.

No, no, it's not. iPhone unlocks will be undone by any new system updates or software restore. iPhone unlocks also end up being less than reliable.

 

No one else appears to have bothered checking if the OP has an unlocked iPhone.
