NARATHIWAT, Aug 29 – One government defense volunteer was killed and another wounded as presumed insurgents attacked a Sungai Kolok-bound train on Tuesday.

Ten gunmen believed to be insurgents fired at a train enroute from Surat Thani to Sungai Kolok and also fired on the base of a railways protection unit in Cho Ai Rong district.

Two defence volunteers on the train were hit. One man, wounded in the back of his head, was pronounced dead at hospital.

Local train passengers are using train services as usual today. The first train from Sungai Kolok to Surat Thani left Sungai Kolok station at 6.30am.

Security has been tightened aboard trains and at stations to ensure safety for passengers.

The authorities believe that the shooting was an insurgent retaliation after a member of the Runda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) group was killed by a local defence volunteer shooting from a train on Saturday.

The insurgent gunman was killed at the scene shortly after he shot dead a military informant at Cho Ai Rong railway station. (MCOT online news)
