BANGKOK, AUG 28 – Thailand Prathom 6 (Grade 6) students perform better in the Thai language, mathematics and English but the nation’s overall academic proficiency has not improved, according to the Basic Education Commission (BEC).

BEC Secretary General Chinnapat Phumiratana said an assessment of Grade 6 students’academic proficiency following the Ordinary National Educational Test (O-NET) found average points of 48.55 for all subjects with Thai language jumping by 18 points.

The students’ proficiency in mathematics and English language has also increased by 17 points while their performance in science has remained unchanged.

Students in the grouping of universal standard schools and Chalerm Phrakiat schools have shown higher average points of 55.22 and 54.24 respectively.

On the other hand, students in another grouping—dream schools and tambon (sub-district) outstanding schools—did not improve and their scores were on the average scale.

Complimenting the O-NET test as the right path, Mr Chinnapat said more effort will be needed to develop education and teaching so as to improve the students’ academic proficiency.

Nearly one million Grade 6 students take the O-NET exam each year.  (MCOT online news)
