MAE HONG SON, Aug 27 - Senior officials of Thailand’s Mae Hong Son province and the Myanmar Commerce Ministry met on Monday to discuss continued efforts to upgrade the border pass at Huay Ton Noon (BP13) to a permanent checkpoint in preparations for the 2015 ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

Mae Hong Son Governor Naruemol Pallawat met with Yan Naing Tun, director of the Border Trade Department of the Myanmar Commerce Ministry, in Khun Yuam district of Mae Hong Son. High-level officials and representatives from the private sectors of both countries participated in the meeting.

High on the agenda was the joint effort to upgrade the border pass at Huay Ton Noon, known as BP13, in Khun Yuam district to a permanent checkpoint to enhance border trading as well as social and cultural cooperation between the two countries.

Mrs Naruemol said seven districts in Mae Hong Son border Myanmar and peoples of both countries have enjoyed friendly relationships and trading exchanges for a long time.

The Mae Hong Son administration, she said, plans road improvements from the provincial seat to Huay Ton Noon to facilitate transportation and logistics.

Mr Yan Naing Tun said it will be a good opportunity for Myanmar and Mae Hong Son province to increase border trading and that Myanmar will cooperate with Thailand in upgrading the border pass linking Huay Ton Noon district and Kayah State of Myanmar to a permanent checkpoint.

He said he will submit resolutions from Monday’s meeting with Thai authorities to the Myanmar government for further consideration. (MCOT online news)
